Day 41

Jacky pried herself away with a respectful nod. She focused on the map again.

“We used to own two of these, but someone paid a lot of Nero Points for the backup. I haven’t looked at this map in a few years, so it’s not been the biggest of losses.”

“How did you acquire the maps?”

“Schools earn Nero Points. They buy the maps. If they get a tear or the map changes, they sell them. This is…” Jacky watched me tap on my linker. “No, wrong menu. Go to ‘navigation’. I know, weird. Yes, then select maps. Trade. Alchemy. There.”

“What the fuck!” I stared at the linker in shock. “The cost of the map was four hundred Nero Points. And I’d need two!”

“You’re looking at it the wrong way. Assume you have a ship worth a million gold coins with a crew of fifty sailors. You need the most up to date map the linkers can provide. What’s four hundred?”

“Nothing. I get it, but I’m not rich.” I hung my head, disappeared at my lack of funds.

Jacky rubbed my back supportively. “You’re gorgeous, a leader, and even if Letti thinks you’re dumb, you’re not. You’re just oblivious to the ways of this world, which is odd, but you are still capable. So, don’t get down on yourself.”

“Ugh. Yeah, I’ve always been assertive for a woman, and it seems that makes me twice as manly as before,” I said out loud.

Jackie laughed. “And you say weird shit, but hey, you’ve proven to be caring of the poor, brave for the defenseless, and understanding to the… unfaithful. Not many possess such qualities.”

My face heated a little, and I grinned. “Alright, enough with the flattery. This fucking dick swells a bit when you talk like that.”

“Pull my hair and slap my ass, you sure know how to make me lose my focus,” Jacky said, bouncing her eyebrows.

She made it extremely difficult to stay true to my word, and the sexual tension just kept brewing between us.

Maybe it was because Letti was such an asshole that I wanted to fuck her wife.

Maybe it was because she was cute, interested, and it’d for sure be on the down low without any commitments.

Or maybe it was because I just fucking wanted to.

I suppressed the urges, thought of kittens, and restored my balance.

Jacky pouted, noticing my change. “Alchemy requires catalysts, but without a doubt, it’s magical.”

“Like flinging fireballs magical or like…?”

“Huh? No. But reading books is good for you,” she teased. “There is no physical evidence of magic anywhere on Nero. What happens, more or less, occurs in the heart. Or core, depending on who you ask. When the concoction is just right, you’ll feel a burning in your chest. That’s it. Then you cork the potion and onto the shelves it goes.”

“Fuck,” I mumbled.

“What?”

I flipped a hand into the air in an errant gesture. “It just seems like a sign of glowing or shimmering or whatever would validate the spell is good and worthy of being sold.
