Chapter Twenty-two

COOL MOM, read the license plate of the white minivan parked in front of me. I stared at it, unsure of my next move. Should I track down Martin and have him finish the story? Or should I deal with Patrick? Are they still together? I pressed fingers against my eyes and, making my decision, dialed the number.

“Where are you?” I asked when Marty answered.

“At my office.”

“Are you still with Patrick?”

“No, he went home.”

“We need to finish our discussion.”

“Come to my office.”

No way was I about to give Martin the high ground by meeting at his office. The evening sky waned, and it wouldn’t be long until the shroud of darkness covered the city. My brain raced to find a public location. “No. Union Station food court, in front of the Chipotle. Twenty minutes.”

“Really, Karina. There’s no need for this cloak and dagger business.”

“I beg to differ. You brought a gun to our last meeting, and your son’s put a tracker app on my phone.”

“I had nothing to do with that.”

“And the gun?”

“I’m sorry about that.”

“I suggest you leave it at the office. Twenty minutes.”
