Chapter 16

At first Isabel was feeling pretty good about what she had accomplished after just one day in Milwaukee. She was so looking forward to telling Abigail that she had found Jacob and that he had made such a good impression on her. Given how many possibilities there were for less positive outcomes, this was sure to come as welcome news. While she was certainly happy to have found him, another part of her was thinking that this had all been just a little too easy. She hadn’t really accomplished anything that Jim Rockford or Joe Mannix couldn’t have accomplished in the first five minutes of the show. Then they’d still have fifty-five minutes left to squeeze in an attempt on their life and a car chase before the crime was solved and the criminal was brought to justice. Isabel was starting to think maybe there was more to be revealed, and that this particular show might not be over, either. She would just have to take things one step at a time, she told herself, and today was definitely a step in the right direction.

Pulling up to the luxurious-looking hotel Charlie had booked for her along the waterfront was a happy surprise. She had called him to book a room for her because she knew he used some sort of website to get good deals on hotel rooms that she could never afford to pay full price for and wouldn’t, even if she could. She couldn’t remember the last time she stayed in a hotel where she didn’t pull in and park right next to the front door of her room. To have a valet park her car and then to take an elevator to a room ten floors up was getting pretty highbrow for Isabel Puddles. After entering her spacious and beautifully appointed hotel room, she walked over to the window and pulled open the drapes to reveal a sweeping view of the Big Lake and a good chunk of downtown Milwaukee. She was amply impressed. Milwaukee was a much nicer city than people gave it credit for being.

Sitting down on the edge of the bed, she called Ramush to give him the good news, but he was not nearly as responsive as she expected him to be. When she asked to speak to Miss Bachmeier, hoping she might be a little more enthusiastic, he asked her to hold off telling her about Jacob for now. “I’m not second-guessing you, Isabel, I just need to be certain it’s really him before we get Miss Bachmeier’s hopes up.”

“I am one hundred percent certain it’s him, Ramush,” she responded emphatically. “He recognized himself and his mother in that photograph you gave me, but not Mr. Bachmeier. All he said was that he thought they looked kind of alike. Maybe he’ll remember more after you meet him and reminisce a little about the time you spent together in Madison.”

“Well, I must say I’m impressed with how quickly you were able to track him down, that is assuming he is the Jacob we’re looking for.
