Chapter 11

Lois’s entire body still felt alive, even after her shower. Every part of her was lit with some internal fire that she couldn’t explain. She understood the word “carnal” now in a whole new way.

Dylan, innocent of his crimes, was sexier than she’d have ever imagined, and her husband.

She towel-dried her hair and glanced at herself in the mirror.

Maybe she could get an outfit or two that fit her better than her current dress, which just hung on her without even hinting at a waist.

She shrugged, hung up the towel, and headed out. Dylan was dressing in a light-blue t-shirt that showed off all his muscles and jeans clearly made exactly for him. She walked over, kissed his cheek, and said, “Dylan, this whole baby-making thing might be fun.”

He hugged her waist. “As long as we don’t tell anyone until it’s a done deal.”

Her heart beat a little faster and she glanced down at his washboard abs unfortunately covered by his shirt. “My mother would be the last to give me advice in the bedroom anyhow. I was only eight when she gave me a lecture on how carnal sin was always the woman’s fault for causing male desires.”

“A real man is in charge of his own body.”

“And he wouldn’t blame a woman for his own problems?” She’d never understood her mom’s logic.

“Agreed.”

“I’m still nervous though.” Her stomach knotted. Lying wasn’t good. Her lips tasted like she ate battery acid or something horrible, so she tried to shake the negative feelings off.

“Don’t be.”

“I’m trying to relax and not dwell on lying.” This wasn’t the same as all the lying she’d done before—she’d thought it had been a job. Thankfully, Dylan had forgiven her and Lois would protect the Bentleys now. “I’m here to help.”

Her phone rang.

She froze and didn’t want to answer. No one ever called her, except Mariam.

If only she’d never picked up the phone in the past.

Dylan nudged her toward the side of the bed where their phones were on their chargers. “Lois, your phone.”

She sucked in her bottom lip. He had to understand. She swallowed and shook her head as she said, “I don’t want to answer.”

He took her hand and said, “I’m right here for you.”

She wished she’d put her hair in an elastic and out of her face as it now fell in her eyes. She pushed it behind her ears. “We didn’t talk about how to do this.”

He took the phone off charge and handed it to her. “Put her on speaker and I’ll write down everything Mariam says.”

Lois slumped onto the bed that was still warm from all their activities. She held the ringing contraption that she wanted to toss against the wall and asked, “Did Navid get the cameras in here? What if he missed one?”

Dylan sat beside her and massaged her shoulders. “We’ll find out. Don’t lose this opportunity to help my family.”

Right. She sucked in her breath and her heart stilled. This was her way to make up for what she’d done.
