Chapter 10

The next morning, Martha reached over from her side of the bed and cuddled into Jordan’s arms. She released a sigh and just stayed still while she felt the sunshine on her cheeks.

If would be hard for anyone to get to them in a high-rise building, this far up in the sky.

And her body felt too warm and mushy to think beyond the fact that Jordan was right beside her.

She brushed his arm, feeling the hairs tickle her skin.

Jordan Bentley was awesome. Until this weekend, she hadn’t noticed how caring, protective, or funny he’d been. He’s always been the cute customer and now he was her husband. The thought left her breathless.

He woke up suddenly like he’d just heard a gun being shot. She stilled and watched, waiting for him to say something.

His body was tight from fright, but instead of explaining he rolled his shoulders, pushed his legs off the bed, clearly shaking off whatever that nightmare had been, and picked up his boxer briefs from the floor. “We should get going.”

“Where?” She swiveled her legs to his side of the bed while he sat.

He pulled up his underwear. “School. It’s the most common place we go and the best place to be seen.”

Seen? Right. They needed to act like this marriage was official and they were happy and in love. She stood, picking up her own underwear and bra and asked while she pulled them on, “So, you think it’s Jessica?”

He leaned down and kissed her forehead. “Anything is possible, so we’ll ensure we see her today and act very, very happy.”

Her heart beat faster from the touch. Part of her wanted to pull him back to bed, ask him what his nightmare had been, but her mind raced. The deal they’d made included pretending to be in love. She glanced at the clock on her cell phone and read it was already eight fifteen. She covered her lips as she needed to brush and said, “She’s in my nine o’clock class, which I’ll need to run to or I’ll be late.”

She was halfway in the bathroom when he called out, “Perfect. I’ll drive you and meet you when the class ends outside the door.”

“Sounds good.” She cleaned up fast.

He must have done the same because when she went into the kitchen area, he wore clean jeans and a polo shirt while he handed her a to-go mocha latte and a muffin on a plate. They headed to the glass kitchen table by the bay window overlooking the blue ocean. “Great. Can’t wait to buy my wife lunch in the cafeteria, which is something I never thought I’d say.”

She sipped her mocha and cut her muffin in half. The chocolate chips looked inviting. She took a quick bite that melted in her mouth. This was clearly freshly baked. “If you want, we can let people know we’re taking one of those weekend cruises that the guy in the hallway is always selling so people think we’re taking a honeymoon.
