Chapter 14

It wasn’t yet dawn, which meant the food mess hadn’t begun serving. The moment the morning staff saw Yvette, there was a rush to get the coffee going and assurances that, “It won’t be long. We’ll get started on the food.”

Good, because she needed something to occupy her. She’d kind of known what might happen if she slept with the captain again. Knew and looked forward to it. Enjoyed it, too. The problem now being her damned brothers were determined to treat her like a virgin nun who should be wearing a chastity belt.

They caught up to her at the mess tent, wearing tracksuits and glowers. They surrounded her at the table, Owen and Phil across from her, Xavier to her side.

Since she wasn’t about to cower, she attacked first. “What the hell were you thinking, barging in like that?”

Owen blustered. “We came to check up on you and found with that—that—”

“Snack,” Phil supplied.

She rolled her eyes. “Stop it with the I’m-a-big-bad-predator schtick. You had no right.”

“You’re our sister,” Xavier pointed out.

“Yup. And you’re my brothers. Do you see me barging into your private lives, threatening the women you sleep with?” she asked with an arched brow.

Being a dumbass, Phil said, “I’d be okay with it because it would show you care.”

She blinked. “Are you insane? That is not normal behavior.”

“We’re just looking out for you.” Xavier’s placating tone was almost met with her elbow.

“You do realize I am a grown woman? Almost forty years old. And not a virgin.”

The V-word had Owen jamming his fingers in ears singing, “La la la la,” while Phil gagged. Xavier grabbed his heart. “Don’t joke like that. It’s not funny.”

“Are you seriously that immature?” she huffed.

“Yes,” Xavier baldly claimed.

“You’re being chauvinistic tomcats!” The fact that she could empty a clip into one spot in rapid succession didn’t mean shit to them. She was baby Ivy. Joining the military so she could serve the Shifter Council hadn’t changed that perception. “How is it you’re even here? I thought you were on a job in France.”

“It turned out to be a right pisser,” Phil declared.

“Only ‘cause you peed on our target’s security system,” Xavier muttered.

“I had to go.”

“You and your obsession with French coffee.” Owen huffed.

“Better than the love affair you have with their bread,” Phil insulted.

Owen sucked in his gut. “Did you just call me fat, dad bod?”

“I am in way better shape than you, with twice the kids.” Phil puffed out his chest.

Xavier stopped the fight with a reminder. “Bros, not here to fight with each other.”

“You’re right. Ivy’s the one in trouble.” Phil glared at her. “Shacking up with a dude.”

“An old rooster.” Owen punched a fist in a palm. “Thinking he can lay hands on our baby sister.”

She rolled her eyes, and half lied. “For the last time, nothing happened. He has nightmares. Having me there stops them.”

“And that requires spooning?”

“The cots are small. Good thing I sleep like a rock.”

“A rock, yes. A boa constrictor wrapped around a man? Nope.
