“Ring his mobile,” Mona suggested.

“I think I’ll just call the station,” Fenella said. “He might be busy. I can leave a message.”

Shelly grinned at her. “You mean, you hope he’s busy so you can just leave a message,” she teased. “At least this way you’re choosing when to speak to him. If you leave a message, he could ring back any time.”

“Yeah, but I don’t have to answer,” Fenella muttered as she picked up the phone. She dialed the non-emergency number for the Douglas police station.

“May I speak to Inspector Daniel Robinson, please?” she said when the call was answered.

“May I have your name, please?”

“Fenella Woods.”

“Please hold, Ms. Woods.”

Fenella switched the call onto speakerphone and then settled in on the couch next to it. Shelly sat in the chair on the opposite side. Mona quickly crossed the room and sat down next to Fenella.

“Ms. Woods? I’m sorry, but Inspector Robinson is not at his desk at the moment. Would you like me to put you through to his voicemail?”

“Yes, that would be good,” Fenella replied, feeling flustered. They’d never given her that option when she’d called before.

“Is that new?” Shelly demanded. “I’ve rung Daniel a few times and they’ve never suggested that to me.”

“It’s the first time I’ve been offered it, as well,” Fenella told her.

A few clicks on the line later, Fenella heard Daniel’s voice. “This is Inspector Daniel Robinson with the Isle of Man Constabulary. Please leave a message after the tone.”

“Hi, it’s Fenella,” she said in a perky voice that immediately made her wince. “Shelly and I talked to both Helen and Cassie today, and I thought I should let you know about the conversations. Call me back when you have time. Um, bye.”

She put the phone down and covered her face with her hands. “That sounded dumb,” she groaned.

“On the plus side, Daniel probably won’t even notice,” Shelly said soothingly. “I think it’s only women who play and replay messages to overanalyze every word.”

Fenella laughed and then shook her head. “I always sound like an idiot on answering machines. I should have just left a message with the woman who answered the phone.”

“What are you going to wear tonight?” Shelly asked.

“I’ve no idea. What do you think?”

“I think it’s time to raid Mona’s wardrobe,” Shelly laughed.

Half an hour later, Fenella was debating between two different dresses, both of which she loved, when the phone rang.

“That will be Daniel,” Mona said.

“Do you think that’s Daniel?” Shelly asked.

“Probably,” Fenella replied. “I don’t get a lot of phone calls. It could be an insurance salesman, I suppose.”

She picked up the nearest phone. “Hello?”

“Good afternoon. I got your message,” Daniel said.

“Let me put you on speaker,” Fenella said quickly. “That way Shelly can contribute as well.” She put the phone down and then she and Shelly settled on the bed next to it. Mona came and stood nearby.

“Tell me everything that you did today, then,” Daniel said once Fenella told him she was ready. “Start with breakfast.”

Fenella did her best to give the man a complete rundown of her day.
