~Grate Fight~
A
s high summer rolled in, Lenore was glad to get out of the house more often. Because weather in the midlands of Invarnis where Springhaven sat was mild, the air barely played around the edges of being too hot. It was rare for a day to be uncomfortably so, even in the dead middle of the season. Camilla seemed keen to get out as well, and the two would often go for walks around town either through the markets of the city center or the gardens. Lenore had learned of Camillaâs row with Falcon and couldnât blame her housemate for her feelings. Of course, Ginger had broached the subject on more than one occasion when asking after Camillaâs well-being, and Lenore couldnât bring herself to agree with Gingerâs point of view, despite how kind Falcon had always been to Camilla.
âI agree with Camilla. He needs to find a new line of work.â
âHis grandfather will disinherit him if he does,â Ginger argued. âHeâd have nothing. I know that must be difficult for you to imagine, but youâve never had to scrap your way through life. For goodnessâ sake, the Allens donât even charge you rent.â
âOf course not,â Mint said. âSheâs family.â
Lenore swallowed angry words. There was nothing she could say to that because her back story had been left intentionally bland, and living with the Allens was as good as royalty compared to where sheâd come from.
Lenore barely saw Neal anymore. After heâd completed what Mina macabrely referred to as âthe post-mortem processâ for the expeditionâtaking inventory, salvaging the results of the trip and turning some aspects into promotional material for the museum, and worst of all meeting with the museum board members to give an accounting of what had gone wrong and how it could have been avoidedâit was up to Neal to make most of this happen. He co-authored papers, communicated constantly with Baqer in Bone Port, worked with the Anthropology department on their study of the bodies, and many other tasks.
And he didnât want Lenoreâs help with any of it.
Sheâd persisted in offering assistance, but each time Neal had politely brushed her off. Was it possible he didnât want her as his assistant anymore? Maybe heâd realized he didnât need her. Thank the stars no one complained about her continuing the Subaquatic Sloop copy project in the Arc-Tech department, and Ezra was a better assistant than Rook by a million times. Working on that provided a small comfort to Lenore, like maybe she could still contribute even if Neal didnât want her around. She didnât feel right talking to Mina about it. That seemed somehow wrong, complaining to her about her husband, putting her in the middle. Nevermind that Lenore had done it with both her parents. This was somehow different. She had no such qualms about discussing it with Camilla, however. Camilla would likely go to Mina with the information, but Lenore didnât feel nearly as guilty about that. Sheâd done her duty by telling Camilla about her misgivings in going to Mina.
