Blue Mountain Manufacturing

Culpeper, VA

Monday noon

“Please tell me we’re not union busting.”

Jacob looked up from where he was leaning against his car door and scrolling through his phone. He dropped the device in his pocket and straightened. “I don’t have the details yet but I doubt it’s that simple. That’s not Taggert’s bag.”

Val locked her car, shouldered her bag, and nodded toward the hulking manufacturing plant at the end of the parking lot. A modest storefront separated the visitor parking from the nitty-gritty. Val wished she had worn her slacks instead of the jeans. According to what little Jacob had been able to tell her over the phone, this job was supposed to be all business, no running-around-getting-shot-at. The clients probably expected business attire.

She felt extra self-conscious next to Jacob, who—of course—looked really good in business casual. Everyone else seemed to have a knack for wearing the right outfit for every occasion. She wondered if she was supposed to sign up for a service or something. A butler that lived in the trunk and always had the right costume ready to go.

The front office had an open workspace, and the young man at the receptionist’s desk eyed them as they walked through the front door. He took in Jacob’s suit and Val’s bag, and his narrow look turned into a full-on glare. The other employees fell silent as Val approached the desk. Val could taste the tension humming in the air and plastered on her best smile. “We’re here to see Mr. Beckham.”

The receptionist did not return her smile. “Do you have an appointment?”

“We do. Would you mind paging him, please?”

“Sure.” Moving as if his entire body were encased in pudding, the receptionist leaned across his desk and scrutinized his switchboard. It took him a good ten seconds to find the button he wanted. He started to press it.

The double doors at the back of the office swung open with a whoosh as the air equalized between this small building and the massive open space of the warehouse behind it. The man striding through the door was tall and skeletal, and his brown tie dangled around his neck like a noose.

The employees turned away as he approached the front. He swept his eyes over Jacob and Val. “Viking?” He gestured for them to follow him into a conference room.

After he’d snapped the door shut behind him with a loud click, he went straight to business. “I wanted to call in a consultant last month, but corporate wasn’t willing to eat the cost.” He placed a thick file on the conference table and pointed for them to sit. He paced around the table. “They didn’t believe it was sabotage at first.” He flipped the blinds on the conference-room windows to isolate them from the prying eyes of the front-office workers. “I warned them. I warned the regional director things would only get worse.” He dug his fingers through his thin white hair, standing it on end.

“Sure enough, when the first shift supervisor arrived this morning, all of our liquid cement was contaminated.
