Insight: Museum of Modern Art
Attention and praise is lavished on MoMA’s building almost as much as on its world-class collection.
“One of the most exquisite works of architecture to rise in this city in at least a generation” was the New York Times’s welcome to MoMA’s Midtown home, when it reopened at the end of 2004 after an extensive refit.
Yoshio Taniguchi, the Japanese architect chosen for the project, said his aim was “the imaginative and disciplined use of light, materials, and space.” The facility offers almost twice the floor space of the former building, with airy galleries on the second floor and more intimate exhibition areas on the levels above. The top floor provides expansive, skylit space for temporary exhibitions. The much-admired Sculpture Garden follows the original 1953 design, setting Rodin, Picasso and Tony Smith pieces among trees and calm reflecting pools.
The museum has since purchased the building next door and plans further expansions. Whether this will involve putting the wrecking ball to the former home of the American Folk Art Museum remains a contentious debate. Stay tuned.
