After saying goodbye to Janis, Olivia drove back to her house. She knew that Brad made weekly deliveries of weed to Lana and Wilson. Had Mountain Herbs made a lot of money as one of Lana’s sponsors? Maybe Brad got angry when Lana announced she had been cured of cancer. Or maybe Brad found out Lana didn’t even have cancer! Brad might have feared that his income would dry up and that he’d been treated like a fool all along.

He could have gotten into an argument with Lana. His easygoing nature may have been pushed too far. Maybe both Lana and Brad were stoned, and things got rough. Brad could have grabbed her, one thing leading to another, with Lana left dead by her front door.

Olivia sighed. How many times does it take burning the inside of your mouth before you stop gobbling french fries one after the other? Had a character flaw of Brad’s been revealed right outside the diner? Did he ever learn from his mistakes?

For a moment Olivia imagined Brad’s face as his hands slipped around Lana’s neck. He could have been trying to scare her, and then he started shaking her back and forth until her face turned blue and she stopped breathing. Anger could do that, make a person unaware of their own strength.

For Brad, Lana may have been the one french fry too many.
