Cats opt for human social interaction over food, meaning they’re just as loving as their canine counterparts.

Cats, just like dogs and even toddlers, know that when humans point at an object, we’re instructing them to look at it. Most animals, including even our closest biological living relative, the chimpanzee, fail this experiment.

Cats know their names and will respond to them—even when an unfamiliar voice is calling them. Of course, whether they choose to acknowledge your call is another question entirely.

Cats look to their owners for cues and shape their behavior to human emotions. For example, when a new object, such as a fan with crackling streamers, is placed in a room with a cat and her owner, most cats (79 percent) look to their human for reassurance. If the human responds positively—for example, saying, “What a nice fan” in a soothing voice—the cat understands that the object doesn’t need to be feared and will usually approach it.

Cats are more likely to slow-blink, the feline equivalent of a smile, when someone slow-blinks at them first.

Cats respond to human emotional cues, often rubbing against their owner when the owner is sad or upset.
