Chapter 19

Harper

Since we got back from our family visits, we’ve been crazy busy at the office. I’ve hardly seen Jaxson this week. The last time I saw him was the night I destroyed the kitchen. I’m asleep when he gets home, and I barely recognize that he’s in bed with me. And then he’s gone in the morning by the time I get up. Christophe and I have run the stairs a few times, but I don’t know what Jaxson is doing for exercise. This is crazy, and I worry it’s only going to get harder as we approach the finish line for the IPO, which is in less than six weeks.

I’m sitting at my desk outside Jaxson’s office on Friday morning when I look up to find a tall, distinguished gentleman in front of me, with two bodyguards standing behind him, both wearing visible bulletproof vests.

“I’m here to meet with Mr. Bancroft,” he says.

I pull up Jaxson’s calendar and don’t see any time blocked for a meeting. “I’m sorry. Do you have an appointment?”

He nods. “My name is Robin Friedman. He’s expecting me.”

I point him to the seating area across from my desk. “Please have a seat, and I’ll let him know you’re here.”

He nods, and as he sits down, I notice his giant silver briefcase. The two bodyguards remain vigilant. I’m not too sure about this guy… Is he mafia or one of Tessa Sky’s lawyers?

I knock and enter Jaxson’s office. “There’s a Mr. Friedman here to see you with two of the biggest bodyguards I’ve ever seen.”

Jaxson looks up. “Oh good. Send him in and join us, please.”

My eyes must show my surprise.

“It’s nothing to worry about. I asked him to come. My bad, I completely forgot to put it on my calendar.”

I nod and take a deep breath, not sure what this could be about. This is not the way Jaxson typically does things, and if this guy is up to something illegal, I’ll walk out the door and not even look back. I’m not interested in wearing orange, no matter what the show says.

I return to the waiting area and paste a smile on my face. “Mr. Bancroft will see you now.”

Mr. Friedman stands, and the two bodyguards position themselves outside Jaxson’s office.

“Can I get you anything to drink? We have water, coffee, tea, and a large assortment of soda.”

“I’m fine,” he says. I watch him approach Jaxson with what seems like it could be trepidation. “Mr. Bancroft, it’s so nice to meet you. Caroline Sullivan has so many nice things to say about you.”

I relax. Caroline would never get Jaxson involved in anything shady.

After retrieving a pad of paper and a pen, I try to return to Jaxson’s office, but the bodyguards block the door.

“Um, Mr. Bancroft has asked me to attend the meeting.”

They step to the side and allow me to pass, but by the time I’m through the door, they’ve already blocked entry for anyone else. I don’t know what to think.
