GRIEVING THE LOSS OF CYBERSEX

For a person with problematic cybersex behavior, sex has been the primary relationship—the main source of nurturing in life. The end of that relationship is like a death.1 The person who stops the compulsive cybersex cycle, which gave meaning and direction to life, suffers a very real loss. For example, the following signs of grief are typical in the beginning stages of recovery:

confusion about how to act and what to do

feelings of alienation

fantasies about how things could have been different

sadness over unfulfilled expectations and a wasted life

desire for a quick fix

feelings of exposure and vulnerability

failure to take care of self

uncontrollable emotions

dark thoughts about death, including suicide

sudden accident-prone behavior

fear that the pain will not go away
