CHAPTER FOUR

SHARON GUFFER

I had started obsessing over knowing the details and stories that framed the Tom narrative. I wanted to be sure I was getting every piece of information and so far, I was amazed at how many lives that were ruined by this one man. I have read in times past of men and women who had murdered people, but I had not been as intrigued as I was with Tom Hickens. That man killed babies in the most gruesome ways ever. He takes his frustration out on all of them. One story never fails to leave my mind, because as he narrated, he spoke of a child, a little sweet girl called SHARON GUFFER. He ended her life quickly. Tom's victims didn’t last beyond the attack due to the manner and pattern he used to annihilate them. He makes sure of instance death when he attacked and he never missed.

The day he narrated the Sharon story was a Sunday. I had a strong Christian background growing up; my mom would not let us miss a service. As I became older I lost taste for it, and became less involved—not that I never attended, but I only attended on special occasions or when I had the time. That particular Sunday, the 3rd of May 1995, I didn't go to church. I went to see Tom who had become almost a religion to me. It was Tom that pervaded my thinking. I was simply intrigued, angry, distant, and close—I was a brew of emotional concoctions. Interacting with Tom was fascinating, and at the same time it revealed aspects of myself that I hadn’t known. That morning, it was a bit chilly, as I drove toward the prison, the path which is always lonely and packed with checkpoints. I struggled to wipe off fog from the windshield of my black Mercedes c280.Eventually when I got there, the area was still foggy and cold. I passed through the main gate and headed for the room where Tom and I had been meeting; I was a regular, so they let me pass without any ado. As usual if I arrived earlier. Tom would be in his ward awaiting my arrival, he would then be brought to me. That morning, he had a new cut on his forehead; it was still fresh. He often had fresh injuries on him whenever we met.

“Hey, Tom,” I said before he sat. “How are you today?”

He sustained a faint smile until the officer who was pulling him along, plopped him on the chair. He still smiled, but faintly but said, “I am fine today.” With the tone of is voice, I realized it was Jim.

“Oh, it’s you.” I recoiled.

“Yes me, the unfavorable one. Have any of those chocolates there?” he asked with certainty that I had brought them. I unzipped my bag, brought out my file, my recording device, my notes, and the chocolate that I never failed to bring. I tossed the chocolate at him, but his hands were tied, and I knew he would not be able to pick them up.
