Nash, clutching two irons and an ironing board, held his breath as he moved through the terrible lobby and started up the stairs to Miss Lynne’s apartment when he heard shouting and screaming. His heart stopped, and he began taking the stairs two at a time.

His gut twisted when he saw Miss Lynne’s apartment door hanging open.

Something inside him snapped when he heard Miss Lynne’s cry of fear. Dropping his supplies in the hallway, he raced inside.

“That’s all the money I have. I…” Nash heard Miss Lynne plead with a huge, sweaty, greasy man.

“I told you last time, there are other ways to pay.” The man lunged at Miss Lynne.

Nash watched in horror as he grabbed her.

Nash leaped across the room and dragged the man off of Miss Lynne. He heard roaring in his ears as he defended himself against the big man’s attack.

Finally, Nash dragged him out of Miss Lynne’s apartment.

“Did he hurt you?” Nash demanded as he slammed the door shut on the vile man.

“No.” She shook her head. “You got here just before…”

Nash pulled her against him.

Miss Lynne shook with fear as he tightened his arms around her.

“It’s all right now. He can’t hurt you now.” Nash stroked her face so gently, she blinked in surprise.

As her eyes continued to fill with tears, Nash tenderly pulled her tighter into his embrace.

His heart broke while she cried like a little child.

“He was going to—” Miss Lynne’s voice, muffled by his shirt, cracked with emotion.

“I know, darling.” Nash pressed his hand against the back of her head to hold her against him.

“I can’t stop crying.” Her anguish escalated.

He held her so tight he hoped he wasn’t hurting her. “I know, and it’s all going to be all right. I promise,” he whispered against her neck. “I’m going to…” Nash stopped and rephrased his statement. “Miss Lynne, we will figure this out together.”

Miss Lynne quieted down in his arms. She pulled back just a little.

Nash settled her against his dry shoulder. She pressed her face into him as she shuddered. Slowly, she regained control. She stopped weeping; she stopped trembling. He heard her take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Finally, she spoke.

“Thank you for pulling the landlord off of me. I was terrified.” Her voice, when it wasn’t shredding him into ribbons, was very soft.

“Thank you for explaining menstruation to Grace. I was terrified,” Nash said to break the tension.

Miss Lynne made a noise that was almost a chuckle. “Are we even, then?” She pulled back a little to look at him. Her eyes were red and wet; she needed a handkerchief. He pulled a fresh one out of his breast pocket and handed it to her.

“I’m not keeping score,” Nash said softly.

She pulled back a little farther, cleaned up her face, and then looked up at him.

“I’d drag a hundred men off you, and I wouldn’t even think twice.” Nash’s gaze locked with hers.

Miss Lynne opened her mouth to speak and then clamped it shut.

“Finally! Speechless.” Nash grinned.
