Spherules from a Steam Locomotive

There is a widespread misconception that searching for micrometeorites in the vicinity of railroad lines is impossible, due to spherules produced by the trains. In the early days of the MM research the contamination from steam locomotives may have discouraged more than one good scientist, but today these veteran trains are rare.

The photos shown here are of micro objects found in the boiler and the smoke box of an old steam locomotive, Tertitten, Sørumsand, Akershus, Norway. The spherules are produced by small mineral impurities in the fuel, in this case high-quality Polish coal. They display an impressive variation in morphology.
