Chapter 14

Tina

In fifteen minutes, Jaleesa would arrive. Tina squirmed in her office chair, adjusting things on her desk so they were just so. Her heart was beating fast, too. Nancy had already commented on Tina’s nervous energy that morning, but Tina didn’t let on. They’d all see soon enough when she walked out with Jaleesa to go out for lunch. Would Jaleesa reach for her hand? Would they all see who had picked her? Tina? The one who lived a secluded life and still slept in her pink childhood bedroom?

A knock on her closed office door sent her heart racing. Jaleesa was early. Tina looked up and was disappointed to see Mr. Henderson at her door. Just as he opened it and stepped inside, Tina saw Jaleesa walk into the lobby. She beckoned for Jaleesa to come to her office.

“I’m heading out for lunch now, Tina,” Mr. Henderson said. “I may not be back, so you’re in charge. You eat at your desk, so you’re as good as any.”

Tina’s furnace fired up and boiled to a dangerous level. Jaleesa was close. She’d overhear everything. She could be that wrong kind of submissive right now and bow down to his unfairness, or she could rise up and empower that dominant part Jaleesa said she had.

“No, actually,” Tina managed to say without anger. “After I finish with this next client, she’s taking me out to lunch.” He looked surprised when she didn’t just say, “Yes, sir,” like she usually did. And since she was on this roll, she added, “And I need you to look over those maintenance requests. The restrooms need repair, and those new landscapers aren’t doing a good job, if any job at all.”

His bemused expression infuriated her further, but rather than get herself fired, she said to him, “My customer is here, so if you’ll excuse me.” She politely gestured toward the door.

“I’ll ask Nancy,” he said.

Crap. Sorry, Nancy. Tina looked up and caught Jaleesa’s concerned expression. Tina simply rolled her eyes and sighed.

“Come on in.” Tina gave Jaleesa a quick hug. She wished it could be more. She closed the door to her office and gestured for Jaleesa to sit on the other side of her desk. She hated the plexiglass partition separating them, but that was the trend these days with the recent pandemic.

“What was that all about?” Jaleesa gestured subtly toward the closed door with her head.

“He’s not a good manager,” Tina said bluntly. “He takes advantage of our good natures.”

“Privileged white male in charge?”

Tina burst out laughing. “Something like that, I guess.”

“You handled him well,” Jaleesa said firmly.

“Thank you. I was mad. He was going to take my time away from you. Unacceptable.”

Jaleesa leaned as far forward as the partition allowed and said, “I agree.” She sat back. “Okay, let’s get this thing going. Be honest with me, and no special favors.”

“I actually can’t give you special favors,” Tina said. “Like I told you, the computer has certain parameters that must be met before allowing me to give you a loan.
