Chapter Eighteen

When I’d gone to Jessa’s Place earlier in the day, it had been with the intention of having a meal. However, when Spenser Fields had shown up, the thought of food had gone out of my mind. Now, my stomach was reminding me that I had eaten little more than a granola bar and coffee all day. It wasn’t happy about it.

I looked down at my pug. “Huck, when you don’t know what to do next, have a snack.”

He gave a short bark as if he was in full agreement. Huckleberry truly thought a snack was the answer to all of life’s ups and downs. His favorite snack was a piece of cheese. I didn’t think I’d have any luck finding a block of cheese at the ice fishing derby, but it seemed to me I could buy just about anything else.

Vendors selling everything from T-shirts to popcorn balls lined the lakefront. Out on the ice, it looked like a city unto itself. It’d been a long two days, so I told myself it was fine to cheat on my diet a little bit. I bought a warm cherry scone and cherry cordial hot chocolate. I shared the scone with Huckleberry, but not the drink.

The pug licked his lips after the final bite. I dusted crumbs off my coat and threw my empty paper cup into the trash. “Back to investigating,” I told the pug.

He gave a small bark.

“I know you’re thinking, why should I do that if Kent doesn’t want my help? Until Kent tells me that directly, I’m choosing not to believe it.”

Huckleberry whimpered as if he thought that was a bad idea. Maybe it was, but Kristy was more my friend than Kent was. If she wanted my help, I was going to do what I could for her. She’d already done so much for me.

“Do you always talk to your dog like it’s a person?” a voice asked.

I turned around and saw Sidney, who I had met the day before at the MOBA booth. He wore a plaid trapper hat with ear flaps.

“I talk to him more than I talk to most people. Huckleberry knows everything there is to know about me.”

Sidney smiled. “I had a bloodhound for ten years. He passed on last year. He knew all of my secrets. He was a good guard dog too. Huron wouldn’t hurt a fly, but he was big and slobbery, and the best dog I ever had.”

“I’m sorry for your loss,” I said dog person to dog person, and I really meant it.

“Thank you. Being in the booth keeps me busy.”

“The members of MOBA didn’t take turns in the booth?”

He grunted. “So many of them were selling beer here, they said they couldn’t step away and help with the booth. I think Annette and I were the only ones who weren’t here for ourselves.”

“You don’t brew?”

“Oh, I do! It’s my passion. I just don’t have a storefront or restaurant, and I have no interest in one. It’s such a headache, and I don’t want to be managing people.
