Chapter Thirteen

The fencing match proved to be entertaining and nothing like she was used to. Instead of rigid rules, the vampires sparred without the usual uniform, preferring just their trousers and shirts, and didn’t follow any guidelines. At least, none that she could tell. They simply went at it, darting all over the place and grunting or yelling at each other. Some of the foul things that left their mouths had her laughing even as she blushed.

Damien laughed right along with everyone else as well, his mood more light and carefree than she’d ever witnessed before. When they were alone, he let his kingly mask fall, but now, with his family all around, it added another level of safety to the air that left her king relaxed.

Liana loved seeing him this way. She loved that he looked so at ease. This is how she always wanted him. Never did she want him stressed by his responsibilities or weighed down by his crown. That was inevitable though, all she could do was try to relieve him of some of that stress. Sliding her hand into his, she rested them in her lap, her magic floating with happiness beneath her skin.

Damien took his eyes off the fight. “What is that look for?” he questioned, his body leaning into hers.

With a smile she shook her head. “Nothing, my king.” There was far more that she wanted to explain. With the many prying ears around them though, she’d hold her thoughts for a private moment.

Sliding his free hand to her neck, his thumb brushed her jaw before pulling her into a kiss. His lips were gentle on hers, just a brief caress, yet so full of love. She rested her head on his shoulder as they turned back to the fencing match, where Armand chased Ramone back down to the lake. Ramone led him around the entire lake before returning to the tent with vampiric speed.

“Still faster than you, old man,” Ramone teased his father before replacing his foil in the stand it came from. Armand did the same before launching at Ramone.

He tackled his son to the ground and held him a constricting hold. “But not stronger,” he boasted. Ramone struggled a bit before Armand relinquished his hold.

“Yeah, yeah. We all have our strengths and weaknesses,” Ramone said to justify his loss.

Damien barked a laugh which had her sitting up. “I’m stronger and faster than you both,” he goaded.

Father and son glanced at him then at each other, some private conversation passing between them before they launched at Damien. He tensed behind her but she held him still and erected a shield around herself and Damien, the former kings hitting it painfully. Armand fell backward while Ramone crumpled to his knees holding his broken nose.

Liana leaned back into Damien, letting him support her as she forced a serene expression on her face. “And it appears that I am faster and stronger than all three of you.”

Everyone laughed except for the pair still collecting themselves.
