Chapter 23

If anyone asked her, Elise Valzadari-Falco would have to say she led a fortunate life. She’d worked hard, though, and appreciated the benefit of being able to report to someone who was her best friend. However, she was furious with the dragon and was going to get to the bottom of his recent disappearance.

“Elise, do you have a moment?”

Barely managing to contain her shriek of surprise, Elise turned to find her ruler and the president of the company, Wanderer Zimora Falco, striding toward her at a fast clip.

“Of course,” she responded since she had zero real choice. Although Elise respected Wanderer Zimora and wished to please her, she needed to find out what was going on with Marcus. His vanishing act had gone on far too long, and she wasn’t going to stand for it another minute.

Zimora went past her into Elise’s office, giving her no choice but to follow. Shutting the door, Elise didn’t feel comfortable sitting behind her desk, so she was happy Zimora chose to lower herself onto the small sofa off to the side. Elise took the chair opposite her, and Zimora got right to the point. “I’ve tried to reach Vice President Draconis all week, and I’m running out of patience with him. He spent weeks on end working hours I didn’t authorize, and now he’s not showing up nor has he called with any reason for his desertion. I know you two have a close friendship. Do you have any idea where he is?”

“I wish I did, Wanderer.”

“He’s been a valuable asset to this company, but I simply can’t tolerate him undermining me and choosing to make his own decisions regarding his office hours. Do you know how I can reach him?”

Elise’s heart sunk as she studied Zimora’s face. The reason she wanted to locate Marcus was likely to terminate his employment. He’d been devoting extra time, but his work had grown sloppy, and now he was completely out of the picture without a word. She could understand Zimora’s stance. However, she knew how important Marcus’s career was to him. “Wanderer, if you’d like, I can try to locate him. He’s not returning my messages, but the last I spoke to him, he was checking into a hotel. There was some issue with his condo. I don’t know exactly what because he didn’t elaborate.”

“Please do; you won’t have to make up the hours. I want him here as soon as possible to clean out his desk.”

“Yes, Wanderer.”

With a heavy heart, Elise watched Zimora stalk out of her office. She crossed the space and picked up her phone.

“Valzadari Beading Company.”

“Hi, Zin.”

“Oh, Elise, it’s so great to talk to you. Hi,” Zinlyar gushed. From the moment she’d met her mate, he’d been enthusiastic about their relationship. Two days after they discovered each other, their souls were united, and Elise could offer no complaint about her match. The elf fit into her life seamlessly, though she despaired that he couldn’t get to know her best friend since Marcus was trying so hard to work through his feelings for Damian on his own.
