CHAPTER NINE

IT WASN’T UNTIL HE pulled up outside the huge, almost mansion-like, gated house that Noah remembered that he had picked Franks up. He had, in effect, left his new partner stranded back at the station, unless he either got a ride with one of the uniformed officers or called a taxi. He did feel a little guilty about that, since it was likely to make Franks the object of some of the other cops’ ridicule for a short while, but Noah knew it was better for Franks to be mad at him about that little faux pas than for him to know what he was really doing right now...

He turned off the ignition and settled in. The unmarked car he’d taken from the department’s motor pool had seen a lot of use and was comfortably broken in. He reached for his travel mug, filled with strong black tea, and took a long drink. The night was still cool, but the rain had at last stopped, leaving a somber lacquer on everything it had touched. The house he watched was dark and quiet, giving the impression that it was empty. But even if that were true, Noah knew Evan Dalton had to come home sometime.

This wasn’t his first stakeout, and, as the stillness settled over him, he thought about previous stakeouts he’d been on with his first partner. Rob had a no-nonsense kind of attitude, but a heart as big as the sky, and he treated people with unfailing kindness with no expectation of being treated in kind. He always somehow managed to make the criminals he put away feel not only guilty for what they had done, but also reassured there was a chance it was all going to be okay someday. Noah had never been able to master that talent, but that was part of what made the two such an effective pair. Noah could play the hardnosed figure of retribution, while Rob was the symbol of redemption.

It irritated him to find he could see a lot of Rob’s spirit in Franks. He didn’t want to like this guy, and it hurt like hell having him remind him so much of Rob without being the real thing. He sighed. There were more important things to worry about right now.

He opened his glove compartment and retrieved a set of binoculars. He trained them on the upper windows of the house, then those on the lower floor, but saw no signs of anyone inside. It was a little after 12:30, but he was sure the Dalton’s would not be asleep already. He lowered the binoculars and frowned. What if they had left town to avoid the cops? What if they were already in another state – or another country? If no one showed by morning, he’d check with the airports.

Two hours later, his eyelids were begging him to let them close. He stretched and yawned, then shook his head to dispel the drowsiness. Headlights coming his way caught his attention.
