The Abridged Corrected History of Los Angeles “Heretics”
1911-1940
In 1911, the first film company opened in a small town called Hollywood. This was a newly incorporated portion of Los Angeles that was roughly divided into Central, North and West Hollywood. Black and white films were projected in smoke filled cinemas and nickelodeons entranced audiences across the world. As war raged across Europe, the original home of the cinema, Hollywood became ubiquitous with the movie industry. It also became synonymous with the god-like power of being known. Film Critic, B.F. Andaman, in her award-winning dissertation, The Crucible of Gods, explains in great detail why the allure of Hollywood is such an unusual feature in the history of Los Angeles.
“From its earliest days, Los Angeles has been in a tug-of-war. On one side, benevolent gods, prayers of the faithful, and the occasional unicorn. On the other side, blood sacrifice, demon worshipers, and the usual dragon. The city was as black and white as the projected images of Greta Garbo, and Charlie Chaplin. However, Hollywood changed everything. RKO, Paramount, Warner Brothers, and Columbia pictures gave the lowliest farm hand in rural America and the waitress at a country greasy-spoon one chance. If they took that chance they could become Gods or Demons themselves. They could join the pantheon of the worshiped along with Atlas, Joan of Arc, and Buster Keaton. Luck, money, talent, determination, and sex appeal remain the stations of the Hollywood cross. Those who take up the cross understand that they will hang themselves upon it to be remembered forever or they will be stripped naked, flayed and left for dead for absolutely no reason. It is a marvelous and terrifying business. It is a place like no other”
More and more people poured in to the borders of the once Spanish Pueblo. People came seeking new lives in the desert by the sea, those with pretty faces and empty heads, those with their pasts set ablaze, those who prayed to dark gods, and those with pure souls that were empty as drums. They all had only one thing in common. They were thirsty. They came to the desert to quench their thirst.
Water, water One could almost hear God and Satan slapping one another on the back as they enjoyed good belly laughs while the people of Los Angeles jumped from foot to foot. They bestowed fires, earthquakes, floods, and droughts. Still, people came in droves. In an effort to channel some of the run off of the flood plain and put a thumb in the eye of God himself, the Army Corps of Engineers decided to bury the river in concrete, slowing the water to a trickle of sewage and industrial detritus. This, and the growing worship of celebrity, angered God greatly while amusing Satan dearly. God drank the water from the sand and left the hundreds of thousands of Angelinos nothing but the Pacific Ocean full of salt water to stare blankly at, hoping for a drink. Even Satan thought that this move was a bit much.
