With Nico carrying me, we get to the hunter’s cabin within moments. He places me back on the ground and I try to ignore the feel of his body as he leans against me—and then he pulls away.

“Stay hidden,” he mutters. “I’ll come get you when we have him bound.”

He and Vlad disappear, leaving behind the chill of the air and quietness of the night. If this is true, if this man is behind Violeta’s disease, then we could have her healed within days. Reverse the effects of whatever poison he got coursing through her veins.

Mirabela stayed behind, saying she’d tell Violeta what we found.

I hope it gives her hope. I hate to think of the defeated tone of her voice when I’d last seen her.

A whistle splits the quiet of the night. I snap to and wade my way through the cold. Nico’s by the door of the house, and inside a few lamps offer some much-needed light.

The entire cabin is sparsely decorated. A bed, an area that could be a kitchen, and another that’s a workshop, just opposite. Weapons of all kinds are laid out on a large, sturdy table. Crossbows, regular bows, guns, knives, even two swords. And stakes. A lot of stakes.

Someone groans and I turn my gaze to the middle of the room. Vlad has a man held against the wall. He’s holding him by the throat, and his hands are flailing as he tries to draw in air.

Gone is the kind Vlad I’d witnessed earlier. Instead, his expression is cool, determined—murderous.

“Tell us what we want to know. Did you know we were in the area?”

The hunter is nothing I would’ve expected. He’s smaller than Vlad, and while muscled, I’m having a hard time picturing him killing vampiri.

I snap out of it as he speaks.

“Many know you are here, Dracul,” he croaks. “And many more will soon.”

In my ear, Nico whispers, “Look around. See if anything catches your eye. Poisons, remedies, the like.”

I do as he asks, but the moment I step around him, the man’s eyes widen.

“You.”

I freeze, throwing a confused glance around. He’s definitely staring at me, though.

“I should’ve known. Your father was a traitor, it only makes sense that you are, too.”

I take a step closer. Then another. “A traitor? How?” I never would’ve expected this little expedition to lead to answers about him, and my heartbeat quickens in anticipation. “Tell me what you know!”

The man chuckles. “Only enough. He deserved what he got, one of those beasts coming after him. He never should’ve been saving them in the first place. Not when my poisons were doing their bidding.”

Poisons.... That’s what my daddy was healing vampiri from? I glance around the sparse cabin, noticing a few vials filled with blood.

Nico moves around me. “Did you use your poisons on my sister? Did you!?”

“You’ll never know.”

I see the expression in his eyes a second too late. The calmness. The resignation. Then his hand moves with uncanny precision, drawing a small stake out of the back of his jeans.
