Chapter 18

SAMUEL

I kissed her forehead, lifted her from the floor, and carried her upstairs to the bed, trying not to wake her.

“Samuel, where are you taking me?”

I took caution and put up my shield. I didn’t want her prying into my thoughts.

“You sleep. I need to make sure everything’s locked.” Once I’d laid her down, I went to the bathroom to clean up and grabbed my robe. Man, we didn’t even make it to the tub. I turned off the light, went downstairs, and checked the doors to make sure they were all locked. I noticed my phone flashed with a missed call. I looked to see who it was, and, to my surprise, it was the Sterling’s. I checked my voicemail.

Mrs. Sterling sounded upset. “Samuel, please keep our Rainelle safe. We got a call from Trevor—I mean Sheriff Milton; he said the werewolves were on the move and headed in your direction. If they catch Rain’s scent, I just, just know they’ll be on the attack. Please stay safe.”

I looked once more to be certain all the windows and doors were locked, and the candles were blown out. I left the light on over the stove in case we needed it later. I went back upstairs and grabbed my pistols and shotgun. I laid them no more than an arm’s length away from where I would be sleeping. I went back to the bathroom, turned the light on, and cracked the door. When I got back to bed, I stood there for a moment, watching her sleeping so peacefully. I wondered what was going through her mind. I climbed into bed and remembered the small white box I’d put there earlier. Fuck. Where was it?

At that moment, Rain slid her hand along my back and ass. That one simple touch sent a shiver all the way down my spine. She rose, holding onto my shoulders.

Shit, shit, shit. I didn’t shield myself.

“What are you talking about?” She yawned. “What time is it?” she asked, then lay back.

I gently kissed her, watching her eyes move under her lids, wondering what she was dreaming about. I rolled over to look at the clock; it was three in the morning. With the werewolves searching for her, I was uncertain about making plans, but I knew if I called on Trevor and her mom, we’d be safe.
