CHAPTER 11

I jerked around, turning to face her. “Atonas?”

She laughed out loud. “You didn’t recognize me? You’re a fool. I’m wearing almost exactly the same face.” The face shivered; her eyes grew slightly larger; the skin glistened, then, it returned to the human-girl visage that she’d taken on. “This form is easy,” she said. “I like it. I thought it might be better to use this one to seduce the lovely Vampire King.” She giggled again, and looked me up and down. “Since he didn’t want to have sex with me while I was wearing your form. How does that make you feel? Knowing that he does not want to have sex with you?”

I backed up, putting three feet between us, and pulled out my knife from its sheath in my boot. “What are you doing here?”

She waved her hand towards the bonnacon, chewing its cud mindlessly in the paddock. “Trying to have a little fun. Your little doctor friend over there is fairly enjoyable.”

I cocked my head. “Doctor friend?”

“The one who distributes drugs.”

I pursed my lips. “He’s not a doctor. He’s just a narcissistic attention-whore.”

“Well, he was relatively enjoyable for a bit. The party we had last night was good, clean, wholesome fun.”

I had no idea what the fae underworld prince would call ‘good, clean wholesome fun’. “Those girls looked stoned out of their minds,” I said through clenched teeth. “What did you do to them?”

“Nothing they didn’t want me to do.” She shrugged. “Well, they didn’t say they weren’t enjoying it.”

“Have you ever heard of consent, Atonas?”

She looked confused. “Excuse me?”

I exhaled, and backed up a few steps, giving myself room in case she wanted to fight. Just then, something occurred to me. “You said you had a good time?”

“No, I didn’t. I said that I had good, clean, wholesome fun.”

“Wholesome for you, you mean.”

She waved her hand dismissively. “Whatever. I’m still owed my time with your Vampire King. And I will have him.”

The burning feeling reared up in my chest again; suddenly I was so mad that I could choke. I bared my teeth at her. “You will not. He is not yours to have.”

She sniffed dismissively. “He’s not yours either. You have not claimed him, and he has not claimed you. Besides, I came to him wearing your body, and he refused me.”

“Exactly,” I pointed my finger at her. “He refused you. As soon as he realized you weren’t me.”

“Irrelevant,” she shrugged. “I will have him, no matter what. He may find this body more to his liking.”

The hot feeling threatened to overwhelm me. She was right – Rafael wasn’t mine. I wasn’t even sure if he liked me very much. He’d made it clear that he was only interested in other vampires and wouldn’t date a human or shifter. I wasn’t either of those things, and I didn't know where I stood.

And he hadn’t mentioned fae.

Rafael was free to do what he wished, but the idea of him making love to this beautiful body in front of me made me feel homicidal with rage.
