But that mirror was the only thing that mattered.

On that second evening, I jumped at the knock on my door. A quiet female voice informed me dinner was in thirty minutes, and Master Graves expected me to join him.

Just great. I had to eat dinner with my worst enemy, and I was going to throw up.

“Oh, Miss Logan?” The girl popped her head in. She was young, barely older than Abbie, her voice low when she whispered, “Miss Lydia’s worried. She said as soon as you find what you’re looking for, you come on home.”

“Tell her I’m fine.” I tried to summon up a confident smile. “Tell her to remember what I told her, and to stay safe.”

“My name’s Cassie, miss.” She bobbed into a curtsy. “And if you need anything”—she scanned the empty hallway—“let me know, and I’ll try to help you.”

“Can you get me out of dinner with Lord Graves?”

I glimpsed the flash of pity in her eyes before she dropped her gaze. “I wish I could.”

“I was only kidding. It’s just dinner.” Seriously, how bad could it be?

Nathan waited in the enormous room with the mirrored walls, the one that had, only weeks ago, held most of the landed gentry of Charles Town.

Tonight, it was just me and him.

“Lord Graves.” I threw out a curtsy, and a damned good one at that.

He bowed, that sardonic smile pasted on his handsome face. “Miss Dean.” He pulled my chair out, running his fingers down my arm again.

Yeah, that shit was getting nipped in the bud.

I pivoted and grabbed his hand, forcing it against his spine as I pinned him to shiny mahogany table. The bones in his wrist ground together as I leaned in. “Let’s get one thing straight, Lord Graves. Or may I call you Nathan, since were buddies and all?”

He grunted, which I took as a yes.

“We might be allies, but if you touch me like that again, I’ll break your hand. You might be immortal, but I’ll bet it’ll hurt.” He hissed when I twisted harder. “Tell me you understand.”

“Perfectly, Miss Dean.”

Releasing him, I stepped away.

I could have used my magic, but I didn’t want to do that big reveal just yet. I was saving that in case of an emergency. In this timeline, only Con knew I was a witch, and I wanted to keep it that way.

I sat in the chair Nathan pulled out.

“So. Besides having the mouth of a whoremonger, you break bones. Where did you learn to do that?” He sounded reluctantly curious, which I took as progress.

“Something called a self-defense class. From the future.” I spread the linen napkin on my lap. “What are we having for dinner?”

“Turtle soup, squab, tomatoes, and new beans. And something sweet for dessert, I believe.”

I picked at the soup—there was something about eating turtle that just seemed wrong—but the squab was nice, and vegetables were savory, even stewed to within an inch of their lives.

Finally, dessert was presented with an ample amount of pomp and circumstance.
