At precisely twelve-thirty p.m., I strolled into the clinic carrying lunch for two and a small bouquet of flowers. I’d picked up some food from one of the food trucks downtown, then headed here for lunch.

I walked up to the counter to find an attractive woman who reminded me of my mom.

“Hi, I’m here to see Dr. Kennedy.” I gave her my best smile.

She smiled back at me. “You must be Declan Miller,” she said.

I grinned. “Yes, ma’am, I am. I’m here to have lunch with Callum.”

“Uh, huh. Let me ask you, Mr. Miller, are you the sender of orange flowers and aloe plants?”

My cheeks heated enough to keep our food warm. “Uh, yes, ma’am, I am.”

“That’s what I thought. My name is Ellen, and I’m guessing you’re responsible for the smile on Callum’s face this morning.”

I couldn’t stop the laugh that came out of me. “Well,” I said, rubbing the back of my neck, “I hope I’m the reason.”

“Ellen! What are you doing?” Callum called from the doorway.

She was not remorseful at all, and I loved that she took care of him here. “I’m just greeting the flower-sending, lunch-bringing boyfriend. Is that a problem, Dr. Kennedy?” She winked at me.

“God,” he huffed. Callum was obviously embarrassed a bit. “I told you that you didn’t need to vet him. Just show him to my office.”

“I was just getting ready to do that, Callum. Do not scold me for trying to look after your heart. You know you’re like my son, and I just can’t do it!”

“Yeah, Callum,” I mimicked. “She’s just looking out for you.”

My cute boyfriend raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms. “Fine. I see how it is. You two are ganging up on me already.”

“I would never, sweetheart,” Ellen cooed. “Declan, go feed Dr. Grumpy Pants. He’s had a busy morning.”

I followed her instructions and strode over to my boyfriend. He tried to take the bag away from me, but I refused to let him have it. “You have to pay the piper for your lunch.”

Callum scrunched up his face and made me chuckle. “Pay the what?”

“It means to give him a kiss, Callum,” Ellen said as she walked by, only to disappear behind some swinging door.

My boyfriend blushed ten shades of red before giving me a peck kiss.

“Well, that was disappointing,” I joked. “You can do better than that, doc.”

“Not out here, I can’t.” Callum started walking, and I eagerly followed him. Ellen looked to be rounding up the other vet technicians.

“We’re going out to lunch,” she called to Callum. “We’ll be back later.”

Callum stopped and looked at her. “I thought you brought lunch on Mondays?”

“Oh, I did, but we’re saving it for tomorrow. Thought we’d give you boys some privacy to enjoy your lunch.” She winked at him.

“You don’t have to leave for us to eat!” Callum insisted. His cheeks were flaming again.

“I know,” she said. “But we’re going, anyway. I’ll buzz the back door when we get back. Bye, boys, enjoy your lunch!”

Callum stood there watching them giggle as they walked out the door.
