Chapter 6
âWhere are we going?â Aubrey pleaded again, adjusting in her seat as I tore down the highway, putting some distance between us and the club.
âWherever I want.â The gas pedal vibrated beneath my foot, sending more fiery power to the engine with just a twitch of movement. That was why I enjoyed carsâwhen you cared for them properly, tuned them up just right, they didnât ask stupid questions or go around behind your back. They simply purred under the slightest touch and followed orders.
Her eyes fell closed and she leaned against the window, her forehead pressing into the cold glass. âYou said you had somewhere to be, so why were you still at the club? Were you just waiting for something to happen so you couldâcould take advantage of it?â Despite the accusation, much of the fight had drained from her voice as the adrenaline cleared from her system.
âI didnât figure itâd be any different from any other night around there. I said youâd agree, and you didâalmost exactly when I predicted you would. Except I expected you to make it through one dance. Was actually looking forward to it.â
âYou....â She gritted her teeth. âYou and Devlin are both jackasses. Conniving. Arrogant. Self-serving conmen.â
âTouché. But there is one difference,â I said softly, letting my voice fade into the vibrations of the car. I didnât need to raise my voice to get my point across, since as far as my deal with Aubrey was concerned, Iâd already won. âIâm upfront about what I want. And it seems you understand that difference, seeing as how you just chose me over him. Just like I said you would.â
âYou just met me last night,â she yelled. âYou donât know a damn thing about me.â
Didnât I? Iâd known enough to get us this far. âI know thereâs a good reason you havenât run or gone to the cops long before now. You donât talk like a city girl and probably grew up on one of the back creek roads outside of town. Your nails are a mess even with the fresh acrylics that you applied yourself. Most girls around here wouldnât dream of walking out on stage without a professional manicureâbroke or not. But Iâd wager youâre not even concerned with how your nails look.â
She looked down at them, then fisted her hands and tucked her arms around herself.
âYou barely fussed with your mane of bed hair all day, but youâre physically fit. Probably from staying active, but not necessarily obsessing over working out. Youâre bright but not street smartâotherwise you wouldnât have gotten wrapped up with Devlin. You could have chosen another small town, but like most people, you probably moved to the city hoping for anonymity. A place to start over where you could fade into the background. Well, darlinâ, I hate to break it to you but itâs equally hard not to stand out in a city like this one when you obviously donât belong. A bit stereotypical, I admit, but Devlin always targets a certain type and you fit it.
