Chapter Thirteen

Ember

I was officially sexually frustrated.

I was coming to the conclusion that if Mark wasn’t going to move past second base, I was going to have to do something drastic. It had been nearly two weeks of kissing and petting, but even with the petting, he hadn’t done anything that you couldn’t get away with in public. Well, it might embarrass some people or make parents of young children a little upset. But it definitely wouldn’t get you arrested.

I wanted more. I wanted to explore his body and have him explore mine. I wanted to feel the kind of pleasure that I read about in books and was promised in his eyes. I didn’t want to be a virgin anymore, damn it!

I was finished for the day at school and had just completed editing the pictures for the charity calendar. To say my teacher was pleased would be putting it mildly. It was safe to say that I had an A locked in. My next step was uploading each picture that I had meticulously chosen for each month to the printing company. It was only May, but the calendar for next year would be available starting in June. I had a feeling they were going to need to reorder within a week.

Now that I was done with school for the day, I was planning on stopping by the fire station for a quick hello.

Dating a fireman was pretty much what I expected. They work so many long hours that it kind of sucks to be away for entire days at a time, but when he has days off, we try to spend as much time together as possible. After he takes a really long nap first, of course. Their job is demanding but so important. I couldn’t help the sense of pride I felt whenever I looked at him, knowing that my man was brave and that he saved lives nearly every day.

I walked into the deli on my way off campus to pick up Mark’s favorite sandwich and a dozen cookies for him to share with his coworkers when my phone rang. When I saw it was my mom calling, I groaned out loud. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to talk to her; it’s just that she tended to find something to lecture me about every time she called. Usually, it was about my safety. Sometimes it was about school and whether or not I was studying hard enough.

I stepped back out of the deli, sat down on the little bench outside of the shop, and braced myself for whatever she was going to say. It didn’t help.

“Hey, mom! How are you and dad doing?”

“Ember.”

Oh no, disappointment was already leaking from her and pouring out of my phone.

“Is everything okay, mom? You sound kinda upset.” The goal was to try to get in front of whatever was bothering her before she could get started. If I could take away her ammunition, she usually couldn’t get too worked up.

“I spoke with Maggie today.
