Flight of the Mother Dragon
It felt good to spread her wings and fly again. Kaerinth soared over the low hills, watching as they grew and spread into the Volcanic Mountains. She banked to the right, flying toward the north; the tops of the mountains were visibly dusted with snow. How long had it been since they flowed red with lava as her children emerged from the heart of Orana? Kaerinth closed her amber eyes and turned back westerly, and soon the tower on the western coast came into view. She had heard that Kalinth had information from the dark elves, but he had not yet sent an emissary to tell her what they had said. The Mother Dragon was not patient.
She decided to fly past the tower and check on the Qatu before landing. The feeling of the wind against her scales was refreshing and the addition of the moist sea air reminded her of being a young dragon and emerging from the lava. The sea was fascinating to her, and she hovered as close to the Forbidden Sea as she could possibly go without entering the water. The level of salt and minerals in the waters between Qatuâanari and the mainland was dangerous to her kind, but she longed to dip into the cool depths. That would be first on the list when she returned to Bellesea.
The island came into view and she saw that the Qatu had been busy since the last time she had flown over to check on their progress. The straw huts that they had lived in were gone, replaced with stone buildings. There was one large building in the center with a few smaller ones nearby. Kaerinth was intrigued and flew closer to investigate. She could see what looked like a quarry to the far north of the island, and the stone that was coming out in large straw baskets was a vibrant green. Qatu carried it down the paths to the larger building. Others were taking the stones and breaking them into smaller stones, and then adding them to the sides of the large building. She hovered a moment too long, and soon the Qatu were pointing at the sky. Some ran and hid, but a handful emerged from the large building and stared up at her, almost challenging her with their gazes. Kaerinth frowned. The Qatu had always feared the dragons. Something was different here. She changed her course again and headed for the tower. Perhaps Kalinth could give her some insight.
Circling around, she soon found herself over the water again, and she zoomed up the straits between the island and the mainland. As she flew close to a place that called the Razor Straits, due to large reef formations in shallow water, she banked to the right and the tower soon came into view. Kalinth was on the parapet, and Kaerinth swooped around and landed behind her son.
âMother,â he said without looking around.
âMy son,â she replied as she landed with a thud and walked toward him.
