They dressed in business casual. Their weapons they left in the room safe and only carried their fake diplomatic driversâ licenses. It was going on 11 PM when they stepped out of the taxi and the club looked just like the first surveillance photo Knight easily brought to mind. Slade paid the cover, likely to allow him to commit the interior to memory, but it was clear with one glancing pass over the lower level that Knight didnât have a surveillance photo to match in his memory.
They took their time as they walked the perimeter of the lower-level. Knight had no doubt his partner was noting the exits just like they were trained to do. There were two obvious exits that lead out from the lower level where they entered the club. There was a door off to the side along the back wall and Knight expected it led to a hallway which gave access to the freezer and liquor storage. Almost an equal distance from the door on the back wall on the other side was an elevator. The elevator was unexpected to Knight, though he wasnât sure why, because he spotted no stairs which led to the second level of the club that he could easily see.
âGuess thatâs our way up,â Slade commented and handed Knight a drink. Neither of them could have missed the hulking Italian bruiser who stood guard next to the elevator. Even from their casual distance from the large man who was overkill to guard the elevator, they could see his earwig and a key card reader next to the elevator doors.
As much as Knight wanted to head up to the VIP area and see if Sophie was already there, he remained exactly where he was standing next to Slade at a high-top table. Sophie may be up there, but she may not be, either. If she was in the VIP area, she wasnât going anywhere without them seeing her leave the club. So, observing the club for a while would give them more information on how this mafia run business functioned. More Intel was never a bad thing even if the Intel was never utilized.
Slade didnât look directly at his partner. Still, he was aware Knight was taking in everything. His partnerâs memory would allow him to later dissect everything he had seen. Slade was slightly impressed with Knightâs show of restraint. Granted, he tended to be the more inpatient of the two of them, but knowing Knightâs drive to find his sister... Well, Slade had expected to have to sway his partner to spend some time on the lower level of the club.
Almost forty-five minutes had passed and they were finished their drinks with no sight of Knightâs sister. Slade placed his hand gently on Knightâs forearm. He discreetly nodded toward the elevators when Knightâs eyes met his gaze.
Knight returned Sladeâs slight nod and set his glass down which was nothing more than melting ice before he turned toward the elevator. He and Slade casually approached the elevator guard.
