âI think we need something stronger than coffee for this,â Liz said. âI know just the place. Câmon.â
While I followed Liz through the festival throngs, I pondered the significance of seeing Wolf and Helena together. Helena clearly unsettled and concerned Liz, which in turn bothered me. I hadnât known Liz long, but weâd bonded. I trusted her opinion.
We stopped at a booth sporting a big sign that said, âBOOZY MILKSHAKES,â and despite the fact that it was still light out, I decided to indulge in a treat. Okay, a second or third treat. To me, this fell under the category of self-care.
The rich, velvety pumpkin pie shake coated my tongue as Liz and I strolled through the festival. The boozy whipped vodka cream on top added a delicious kick that instantly lifted my spirits. Nothing like a spiked milkshake on a sunny fall day.
âI wish Marisol was here to try this,â Liz said, taking a long sip of her shake.
Marisol Cross was another woman Iâd met since coming to town. She was a bit older. Of my new friends, she was the one with the most psychic abilities. Not only was she an accomplished medium, but she was also a tea witch.
Iâd never heard that phrase before, but Iâd come to find out that Marisol specialized in something called Tea Magick, which meant she worked spells into herbal tisanes.
âHowâs she doing, anyway? Have you heard from her?â I asked. âHowâs the reunion? Any word about the high school sweetheart?â
Marisol was at her fiftieth high school reunion, up in Brooklyn. Sheâd been nervous because her high school crush was going to be there, and he was single. As was she. Theyâd been chatting on Facebook for months.
âThey hit it off and are supposed to have brunch today. Apparently, he owns some eco-tourism company in the Dominican Republic, in his parentsâ hometown.â
Marisol was also of Dominican descent. âWow, thatâs pretty cool.â
We chatted about Marisolâs prospects of a second chance at love while we perused the racks of a designer that offered pretty dip-dyed cotton skirts.
âHey, cowpokes!â The familiar voice was followed by Sageâs tawny hair and signature cowboy hat. âFancy meetinâ you two here. Hey, whatâs up with your neck? Oh, I know what happened!â
Sage winked.
âItâs not a hickey,â I said. âMy coffee maker spurted hot water on me.â
âSure,â Liz teased, and I swatted her arm.
Sageâs face fell. âOuch, I thought it was a curling iron burn. I get those all the time.â
She, too, was drinking a boozy shake, the orange cream leaving a faint mustache on her upper lip. "You two staying out of trouble?" she asked.
Liz snorted. "With Amelia around, trouble follows her like a fart in yoga pants. Weâve been sleuthing."
âCool beans,â Sage said. It both mystified and amused me that my new friends were so seemingly chill about murder investigations. She took another sip and swallowed. "Listen. I meant to tell you. Speaking of stinky business, did I mention what Bella and Lauren said about Megan?â
âNo,â Liz and I practically shouted in tandem.
