Chapter 17

“I was thinking,” Mimi said, sidling up close to them by the window.

There was nothing truly remarkable out; just the usual display of lights, fake deer and cheery Santa statues, snowmen, and even a nativity scene. A real eyesore, but their neighbors were no better.

“What’s that?” Evan allowed the curtain to fall, only to be bathed in the soft glow of Mimi’s lit tree.

She’d graciously accepted Evan’s apologies, but they anxiously for the other shoe to drop. Mimi at least had the comfort of friends around her, and made it home safe after hours of chaotic bliss.

And now Mimi looped her arms around Evan’s waist and nuzzled into their shoulder.

“If you’re free, I’d like to invite you to a small gathering on New Year’s Eve.”

And there it was.

“Who all is going to be there?”

“Just my parents. We could even leave early, if it gets to be too much.”

“I wish you’d told me that sooner. I already have plans for that day.” Actual plans, and not just a thinly veiled excuse to duck parental figures. They’d arranged something with Hester and Vi, an unofficial celebration of the patricide to come.

“Ah…I was hoping to do the countdown with you.”

“That I can do. My thing is at six and ends at eight, but I can cut it short.” They were sure Hester wouldn’t mind.

Evan rarely had concrete plans this time of year, but agreed to a small get together with Hester and her partner, Vi.

Mimi tugged on their arm. “What else are you thinking about?”

“It’s complicated.”

“Is it about your other girlfriend?”

“She’s not my girlfriend. We’re sex friends at best.” And they used that term loosely.

“Babe, you’re thinking about her when you should be thinking about me.” She had a point.

“It’s just that…like me, she isn’t spending the holidays with her family right now.” They didn’t feel it was their place to ask, especially not with how her mood was lately.

“I kinda want to meet her. Is that weird?”

“No. It’s normal to be curious.”

“You can talk about her, if it helps.”

“I don’t know, Mimi.”

“It would make me feel better if she wasn’t just a faceless entity.”

“Svenja. Her name is Svenja. Tall, German, and likes to have a laugh at my expense.” Evan skirted around the most troublesome tidbit; they couldn’t handle talking about Eddie to Mimi, nor Svenja’s role in it.

“Svenja…Is she white?”

“Is that going to be a problem?”

“No, but I was lowkey hoping you found the rare black German.”

“You’d be surprised, actually. Germany is very diverse.”

“What drew you to Svenja, then?”

“My white half, I suppose. But on a serious note, she’s very confident, and we’re both outcasts in our own way. And I have a soft spot for…wolves.” Transmasc wolves, in particular.

“You’re talking to a werewolf and you didn’t tell me? That’s amazing, Evan!”

“She also wears me out. And I mean that in a good way.” Evan could barely walk straight for a week after that last time. And not just from all the love bites; if they never had sex again, it wouldn’t faze them in the slightest.
