ROAN

Roan spent the day watching as the smoke creature paced back and forth near the edge of his territory. He’d hoped to learn something to help him, but the creature didn’t stop.

The forest grew anxious. Tension built, although Roan couldn’t say if it was all from his woods or if something exuded from the beast he hunted.

It hadn’t seemed to notice his presence, which was odd considering the hours Roan had spent stalking it. He ate quick bites of grass when he could, drank when they crossed a stream, and paced back and forth with the creature until his frustration nearly caused him to attack for the hell of it.

Something held him back though, and as night fell once more, the creature stopped its desperate movements. Roan camouflaged himself in the woods and waited.

Fortunately, they stopped near one of the elders, a giant oak whose acorns had already begun to fall. Roan ate as many of them as he could, trying to restore some of the energy the past couple of days had stolen from him.

Roan had never wished he could turn to Leshy for advice as much as he did now. He’d have long since sent a message through the forest for his old friend, and Leshy would have been at his side by now. Why hadn’t Leshy been able to defeat the creature? How had it bested such a powerful guardian?

More importantly, what was the creature doing? What was its goal? Why did it hover and wait, as if it had a mission of its own to fulfill? Roan was torn between rushing into an attack and waiting to see exactly what the creature had come to do. It was a sign of something more, something worse.

Roan was sure of it.

Hours passed. Roan used the time to rest and regain his strength as the creature simply hovered, unmoving. The damn thing was probably sleeping, which Roan wished he could do. He wouldn’t take his eyes off of it, though.

The decision was taken from him in a moment when the creature suddenly spun and faced him. Roan stood as it floated closer, then began to circle him.

Another!

The trees screamed warning forced Roan into action. He charged the beast. It swirled around him, then through him, and Roan’s body slowed from the attack.

He shook it off, spinning and charging again, this time anticipating the creature’s movement. He slashed his rack through the creature, but it had weakened him more than he realized. He caught it, but only slightly, and rammed his antlers against a tree so hard the tip snapped off one of them.

With a roar of pain and outrage, Roan spun again. He caught sight of the creature and realized he’d injured it in his first attack. It gave him the boost he needed to charge again.

The second creature swarmed him before he’d caught sight of it, and Roan reacted instinctively, slashing through the it and putting as much of his power as he could muster into the movement.

It let out a screech before breaking into pieces and disintegrating.
