I guess you could say that over the twenty-nine-year life of the commercials, I became something of a celebrity. TV talk shows invited me in as their guest. Every major newspaper in the country wrote stories about me and the rise of the Men’s Wearhouse. I met a couple of presidents, while they were presidents. Business schools had me come speak to their classes. I shook hands with Stephen Stills and Manute Bol. The Dalai Lama even granted me a semi-private audience. (Later the same day, a Tibetan scholar who introduced the Dalai Lama to a large gathering at Stanford University became overwhelmed in tearful emotion. In comforting the sobbing man, the Dalai Lama draped his arm around the man’s shoulder and said, in broken English, “I knew your father. He would never be more proud of you.” The expression of compassion was unforgettable, something I’ve never otherwise witnessed in my life. It brought me and everyone else in the room that day into a state of grace.) Everywhere I went, people recognized me, and they hit me every day with “I guarantee it.” Never bothered me once. I’d like to think that most of the people who saw our ads felt the same way the Men’s Wearhouse employees felt about the company, that they knew me.

By 1992, we felt it was time to test the proposition that we had become a comfortable presence in their lives. It was time to go public.
