CHAPTER 12

DELPHINE

My heart was heavy as I crawled into bed in my t-shirt and leggings. It was still earlyish in the morning, and our families were still asleep. My sisters were planning to go to Stanley’s house, but I needed to be with the man who meant everything to me. Tucker was my best friend. I couldn’t imagine sharing my life with anyone else.

Tucker rolled over and wrapped his arms around me. “None of this is your fault, love. Stop beating yourself up.” Having his warmth surround me made the outside world melt away.

I smiled at my husband. We’d been through thick and thin together. He’d been understanding, patient, and loving throughout our relationship, but never more than when I was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. Battling something that killed my Mama made me bitter and resentful. I didn’t understand why I was the one targeted. I loved my sisters, but I was the one that watched everything from what we ate to the soap cleaners, varnish, and paints we used. My thinking had evolved as my body was sliced up. I understood shit happened, and you had to make the best of it. And Tucker had been by my side throughout it all.

I pressed a kiss to his lips. “You know that’s easier said than done for me. Whoever did this dyed their hair to be like mine, Tuck.”

Tucker ran his hand down my back to grab hold of my backside. “Because you’re beautiful. You need to get your mind off this. You need a good distraction.” He kissed a path down the side of my neck.

I sighed and turned my head, giving him more access. The man might not be a shifter or a djinn with superpowers, but he knew how to make me feel things most women dreamed of, like love, passion, and mind-bending pleasure.

“I see you have an idea about how to distract me.” I paused for a brief second before I slowly removed my top.

Since my mastectomy and reconstruction, Tucker let me take my shirt and bra off. My breasts were made of silicone, and I had sensitivity issues, but I hated my scars. They weren’t horrendous. In fact, they’d healed remarkably well. They were reminders of my journey and the courage it took to survive the treatments and surgeries. The best part was not having to wear a bra. Most days, I did, but I hadn’t put one on before we left this morning. It was working out in my favor now.

Tucker ran a finger over the scar across the middle of my breast and then kissed tenderly. The feel of his lips ignited my desire. It wasn't the nerves beneath my skin he ignited, but the core of me. It was his love and attraction to me, regardless that kicked me into a frenzy.

“You are so sexy,” he whispered and leaned down to kiss where my nipples used to be. I used to fear the lack of response when he did the things he’d done for more than a decade during sex.
