Chapter Ten

The heat of the afternoon had descended, and that meant it was time for her second training run of the day after her therapy appointment. While she’d spent the morning getting used to running in soft sand, she would spend the afternoon sweating through fast paces.

She was only two blocks into her run when her phone rang. She slowed to a walking pace to check the calling number.

“I really need to learn to leave this thing behind. Maybe if I left it in the van while parked in the sun, the battery might die once and for all.”

She didn’t recognize the number but answered anyway.

“Ms. Spencer, this is Detective Sosa of the Honolulu Police Department. We met the other day at Kailua Beach.”

“Yes, I remember. Is there news on Ginger Lynch’s death?”

“There is. It’s being classified as a murder. That means since you were one of the primary witnesses, I need a formal witness statement.”

“How am I one of the primary witnesses?” Maile asked. “I didn’t see her die.”

“In a way, you did. You reported you were at her side and even performed CPR, either antemortem or postmortem, which makes you a witness to her death.”

Maile knew better than to get sucked into the same whirlwind of trouble she found a few months earlier in Seattle, when she was escorted to the downtown police station there to supposedly give a witness statement. That had turned into an ordeal she was still recovering from. “You got my statement on Monday morning. I have nothing further to add.”

“I have a suspect in custody. All I need to do is reconfirm a few things you witnessed that morning. At this point, you might be able to provide a little more detail than what you gave Monday morning.”

“Who’s your suspect?” Maile figured it was Agatha, since she was the one who had found Ginger. Maile couldn’t remember the exact timeline of events of that morning, but Agatha may have had enough time in the trailer alone to smother the actress with a pillow, before shouting for help. One of the screams they heard might even had been Ginger’s.

“I need to keep that close to my vest until after I have a talk with you, Ms. Spencer. That way I can get detailed information from you that hasn’t been misled.”

“What does have a little talk mean to you in your world?” she asked. “Interview or interrogation?”

“I forgot that Dave Ota is a relative of yours, and that the two of you have a history.”

“That history, what little of it there was, was expunged from the record and forgotten a decade ago. I’m not starting a new one with you or anyone else.”

“Even Caitlyn Nakamura?” he asked.

“What does she have to do with this? If Ginger was murdered, she wouldn’t be responsible for investigating it, because she’s assigned to Waikiki. Ginger died in Kailua on the other side of the island.”

“I had a chat with Caitlyn, mostly about you, and how stubborn you can be when it comes to dealing with police.
