THE KENAI PENINSULA: The Kenai Peninsula in south central Alaska is connected to the rest of the state by a narrow, heavily glaciated corridor. Few bears migrate through this corridor, making the Kenai brown bear population essentially a closed group. Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologists estimate that somewhat more than three hundred brown bears inhabit this area, with well over half that number found in the peninsula’s western portion. One hundred or more brownies inhabit the peninsula’s eastern edge along the Gulf of Alaska and farther north.

THE ABC ISLANDS: Admiralty, Baranof, and Chicagof Islands support large brown bear populations. Admiralty holds more than 1700 bears, while Baranof supports more than one thousand of the animals. Chicagof is home to almost 1800 brownies. Kruzof, a smaller island in the same archipelago, has a population of about 125 brown bears. The island with the greatest density of brown bears is Admiralty, where 386 bears can be found on every one thousand square kilometers.
