Liam never liked to talk with the Council, and to say that his contact was less than pleased with what he reported would be oversimplifying things. He sincerely hoped Hunter would be able to appease them. But green silver in the hands of people who disliked shifters was a serious problem.

Since Marcus wasn’t answering his phone, Liam felt no compunction in giving up on him and dialing Brian instead. It wasn’t like he wanted to talk to Marcus.

“What?” Brian was grumpy.

“Bad news,” Liam answered then filled him in.

“Shit,” Brian said with feeling. “Was it green silver?”

“The guy practically admitted it was.” Liam lowered his voice instinctively, checking his surroundings automatically. No one was paying him any attention, the hallway he’d retreated to for his phone conversation being relatively empty. Both O’Hara and Hunter had left, presumably to organize further investigation.

“That’s not good,” Brian said immediately. “Especially not on the heels of the last case and its reception in the media.”

“Don’t you think I know that?” Liam snapped back. He’d been close to a painful and messy death today. He didn’t need Brian reminding him about the media. It was the last of their worries, with green silver on the streets.

“I know, I know. Sorry,” Brian replied, sighing. “What a mess. Did you inform the Council?”

“I did. Hunter is going to deal with them later.”

“Better him than me,” Brian said.

“Do you have time to reach Jared or Quentin?” Liam asked, checking his watch. He frowned as a detective he didn’t recognize paused in front of the interrogation room and gave him a curious glance. He pointedly turned to the wall.

“I’ll call Jared. You better fill in Quentin, if he doesn’t call you himself. What about Marcus?”

“Tried him. He is not answering.”

“Ouch,” Brian said.

“What? I did try to call him.”

Liam was pretty sure Marcus hadn’t answered to prove his superiority. But as long as Liam did call, he was in the clear if Marcus tried to complain. He was not in the mood for his games today.

“Better call his beta,” Brian said, “We can’t risk his pack.”

Damn it, Brian had a point. He gave an exasperated sigh. “I’ll do it. That way he wouldn’t be able to accuse you of interfering in his pack,” Liam offered.

“He is not going to be happy with you, either,” Brian cautioned. Marcus already wasn’t happy with him.

“Yes, but I’ll live,” he said flippantly. “Listen, I need to go.”

“We’ll be in touch,” Brian promised.

After another quick call, Liam pocketed his phone, pursing his lips as he considered his next move. He strode down the hallway, pausing next to the interrogation room. It was now empty, so Lio was done with Sean. But where was Lio then?

When he poked his head in the squadron, the low buzz of conversation intensified. No doubt by now everyone knew what happened. Liam did a quick survey of the room. He hadn’t expected to find Lio here, but—

“Hey.” He gave quick smile to Mitch before coming up to him. “Listen,” he said, leaning casually on the man’s desk.
