MIXING VIBRANT AND DULL COLORS

Sometimes it helps to look at the hues in relation to each other on the color wheel. In order to mix a vibrant orange for example, you would mix red and yellow. To dull that orange, you would mix in a bit of the color that sits opposite from it on the color wheel (blue). So if you are mixing a red (that has blue in it) with a yellow (that also has blue in it), you’re adding a lot of blue into your orange. This mixture will result in a dull, earthy orange. In order to keep your secondary mixtures as clean as possible, keep its complementary color (or the third primary) out of your mixtures!
