Chapter Ten

I got up, made the bed, and then went through my new ritual of a simple breakfast and coffee before I got to work on the kitchen. I started patching any holes in the walls, sanded, and then taped off the edges of the cabinets and around the molding.

After everything was prepped, I laid down some plastic sheets and started to paint. I had chosen a cozy shade of light blue to lean into the “beach house” feel. It would look clean with the white molding and cabinets. I got the walls all finished after two coats of paint and would do the cabinets and molding tomorrow, since I didn’t have any more work orders.

Then it was time to get cleaned up for my date with Sophie, so I scrubbed off all the paint, shaved, put on a little aftershave, and then put on a nice pair of jeans and a button-up shirt. After that, I went to a florist and picked out two bouquets of fresh flowers. One was a bunch of pink roses with a little baby’s breath, while the other was a mix of calla lilies and green fronds.

I drove to the Beauville Library next and went inside with the pink roses. I figured I’d give the older ladies at the library something to talk about. A mysterious stranger comes in, offers the shy girl who works in the genealogy room some flowers, then spirits her away for a night on the town. It’d be the talk of the office for a month.

When I walked into the large, old building, I was impressed with how grand the library was inside. High ceilings with crown molding. Marble floors with only a few minor cracks from over a century’s worth of wear. Tall, dark mahogany bookshelves with those old brass ladders you could roll to one side or the other to reach a book that was high up. It was beautiful.

A thin woman with stark white hair was at the front desk, and she typed at the speed of lightning on a new computer. The lady was the picture of a librarian, with small, round glasses on a chain around her neck and a light sweater over her shoulders. I walked up and quietly cleared my throat so I wouldn’t startle her.

“Begging you pardon, ma’am,” I said in a voice barely above a whisper, out of respect for where I was. “But I’m looking for Ms. Fox.”

“Sophie Fox?” the older woman confirmed quietly as she looked me up and down, and her eyes lingered on the roses.

“Yes, ma’am,” I replied as I gave her a winning smile.

The white-haired librarian held up a finger as she eyed me with suspicion, and then she took off one clip-on earring as she picked up the phone and dialed an extension.

“Sophie, dear, you have a visitor… yes, I’ll tell him,” the woman said before she hung up the receiver. “Ms. Fox will be up shortly. You may wait for her over there if you like.
