Chapter Ten

Sophie, Marcel, Jenni, and I stayed at Rocky’s to finish our food, and despite my reservations, I thought Mimie coming along with the team next weekend was a good thing. The spooky waitress seemed to know more about magical practices and curses than any of us at least, and whether or not Mimie was the real deal would come out over time.

But I could feel some of the excitement in the group start to flag. Our first investigation had hit a snag early on, and that had affected the morale of the group. As the leader, it was my job to get on top of that.

“I know it’s a little last minute,” I said before I took a sip of my soda, “but I think us and Smitty should do something tonight. You know, celebrate our first night of investigation as SARGE.”

“Shouldn’t we wait to celebrate until after the job is over?” Marcel asked as he wiped the crab cake grease off his fingers with a napkin.

“This isn’t about the job.” I shook my head and grinned. “This is about us as a group. Whatever happens next weekend, we’ll tackle it together. And I for one think we could all use some fun.”

“We could go to that new noodle house that opened up off the boardwalk,” Jenni suggested. “I’ve been wanting to try it out. I heard they also make their own sake in house.”

“As good as that sounds,” Marcel replied, “it’s gonna be packed with spring break kids tonight. It’d take ages to get in. Maybe we should think about a locals-only place, and I’ll take you out for noodles sometime during the week.”

“What about the old arcade?” I asked as I started to clear away the trash from my early dinner. “The one just outside of town with the bar and the mini-golf in it? What’s it called?”

“Putter Up?” Jenni said in an excited voice, and her face lit up. “Hell yes! I love some mini-golf. That’s the perfect idea, El.”

“That does sound fun,” Sophie giggled. “I’ve never been to Putter Up, but some of the girls at the library talk about it.”

“Putter Up it is,” I chuckled. “I’ll see if Smitty is free.”

I pulled out my phone and let our IT tech know what the plan was.

Mind if I bring Darryl? Smitty texted back. I promised I’d hang out with him tonight, but I think he’d enjoy going out.

Of course! I typed. Darryl is an honorary member of the team. Let’s plan on meeting up around 6, since it’s a work night.

Sophie and I hung out with the Allards the rest of the afternoon, and then we all drove out to the big arcade outside of town. I drove with Sophie in the passenger seat, but Marcel and Jenni had decided to drive separately.

Putter Up catered to the locals of Beauville, but it wasn’t exclusive to residents. That made the arcade more in the realm of a hidden gem in the area. They didn’t advertise to tourists, but a few who came to Beauville every year knew about it.
