Chapter Four: Tips For Unlocking Insights about Other People’s Values
Mind reading is no magic. It is a science and skill that is painstakingly mastered by a majority of successful people in the world. Being able to read people is a gift that comes handy just about anywhere from approaching your boss for a raise to understanding your client’s needs to asking someone out for a date.
Here are some tips for decoding people’s values and desires through their cognitive thoughts and actions.
8. Begin With Generational Differences
Though this may not come across as a very accurate technique for decoding a person’s values, it can act as a good baseline for understanding the glasses through which a particular person perceives life. Generational differences can be more intriguing than we believe.
While millennials may often believe in impersonal, non-face-to-face communication and believe in articulating their thoughts through blogs or social media, boomers may prefer person, face to face interactions. Identifying the generation a person belongs to can be helpful while approaching an individual or establishing a relationship with him or her.
For instance, if you are looking to seal a deal with a millennial CEO, you’ll know that there are fewer chances of him or her wanting to finish all the formalities in person. They are someone who moves with time and will be comfortable sending documents back and forth via email. A virtual presentation may work just fine for them. However, if the CEO is a baby boomer, he or she will prefer the old-fashioned ‘spending money and taking potential associates for lunch or dinner’ route. Identifying an individual’s generation can offer several insights into his or her values.
9. Watch People’s Hot Buttons
What are the emotional triggers for a person you want to study? What does their comfort zone comprise of? Knowing people’s emotional triggers can offer a good insight into their value system and desires.
My favorite tip is to learn more about people's values by asking open-ended questions. Rather than sticking to yes/no questions, try and ask questions that will elicit in-depth answers, which act as a window for the person’s values.
10. Power
The manner in which people handle power or treat people who aren’t as powerful as them, reveals a lot about their values or character. What is a person's attitude towards people who he or she perceives to be ‘beneath' them? How does the person treat waiters at a restaurant or a customer service advisor? What is their attitude towards children and animals?
The way a person treats someone who can do absolutely nothing in return for him or her speaks volumes about his or her values. Are they particularly rude to people below their level of power? Do they engage in selfless acts? All these reveal a person's true color.
11. Reaction to Criticism
The manner in which a person reacts to criticism reveals a lot about his or her values. How does a person react to being criticized? Do they get into a fit of rage and lash out at the person criticizing them
