At Marnie’s Café across the street from the station, Stefanos orders a cup of coffee. In walks the local town sheriff Jim (Richard Webb) as Marnie sounds off about Bailey and the sheriff’s girlfriend Ann (played by Virginia Huston) always going fishing afternoons together, insinuating a love triangle. So the lingering question is, where is Jeff Bailey right now?

The scene cuts from Marnie’s Café to a bucolic, brightly lit river fishing scene in the California mountains where Jeff proposes marriage to Ann just as the mute boy shows up and tells him in sign language that a mysterious man from the city is waiting to see him at the gas station. Bailey (played by Robert Mitchum) reels in his catch and tells Ann a “man want to see him” in town. Joe Stephanos and Jeff meet and talk, Stephanos telling Jeff “that man” Whit (played by Kirk Douglas) wants to see Jeff again at his home in Lake Tahoe. Apparently Jeff blew the best job Whit had ever given him. Jeff picks up Ann at her home. (Her parents don’t approve of him.) Jeff asks her to ride with him to Lake Tahoe and reveals his true identity after Stephanos shows up, a man “out of the past.”
