Dell and I went over to his momâs house to grab coffee in the morning. Itâd become routine since his mom always had on a pot of strong java on, and we were both lazy when it came to shit like that. Iâd pretty much quit pretending I was the worldâs biggest drunk who had to sleep on Dellâs couch several times a week. Let them think what they wanted. As long as no one mentioned it.
Dellâs mom and Gala were sitting at the table having breakfast. âMade enough for you two,â Mam said, smiling at me and waving a hand at a platter of eggs and toaster waffles. âCome sit down.â
âI have to leave for work soon,â said Dell, pouring milk in his coffee. âMonday mornings. Gotta love âem.â
âIâve got a half-hour or so,â I said, happy to take a seat and help myself to the food. I piled up my plate.
âI met Tessa and Shane on Saturday,â Gala said cheerfully. âTheyâre both amazing. Youâre lucky to have such a nice family.â
I froze in the middle of scooping eggs onto my plate. My face flushed hot then cold. A chill ran down my spine. âW-what?â
âGala was gone all day. She seemed to really enjoy it too,â Mam nodded happily.
Gala gave me a funny look. âYeah. Tessa called two days ago and said they needed help with bridesmaid dresses for your brotherâs wedding. She said you told her I was good at that sort of thing. So I spent the day over there.â
I glanced at Dell. He just looked confused.
Holy shit. Gala had gone over to the compound. Had she said anything? What had she told them? Iâd been hoping my family would just forget Iâd mentioned Gala. In fact, the whole thing had slipped my mind.
âHow did they⦠how did Tessa get your number?â I tried to sound casual.
Gala took a sip of juice. âI think your father got Dellâs home number from Cal Fire or something.â She shrugged and looked at Dell, her eyes sparkling with animation. âDell, itâs so cool. They had this pattern that Anita had picked outâsheâs the bride. And it was okay but a bit stodgy, you know? So I suggested changing the neck and hemline and adding a cute little bustle on back, because Anitaâs dress is slightly Victorian. Tessa loved that. And Shane got the most gorgeous fabric. Heâs hilarious, by the wayââ She grinned at me. âBut we didnât want to waste the real fabric, âcause itâs expensive, so I quickly did a trial version with this gray cotton Tessa had. And it was so chic, Tessa wants to finish it and wear it for real! Like, just the mock-up. And Anitaââ
Gala went on about the dresses, clearly in her element. The words rushed in my ears like the ocean. I sat there choking down eggs, which had turned to rubber.
Had Gala said anything about me and Dell?
Right now, at this moment, did my family know? Were they sitting
