Dell and I went over to his mom’s house to grab coffee in the morning. It’d become routine since his mom always had on a pot of strong java on, and we were both lazy when it came to shit like that. I’d pretty much quit pretending I was the world’s biggest drunk who had to sleep on Dell’s couch several times a week. Let them think what they wanted. As long as no one mentioned it.

Dell’s mom and Gala were sitting at the table having breakfast. “Made enough for you two,” Mam said, smiling at me and waving a hand at a platter of eggs and toaster waffles. “Come sit down.”

“I have to leave for work soon,” said Dell, pouring milk in his coffee. “Monday mornings. Gotta love ’em.”

“I’ve got a half-hour or so,” I said, happy to take a seat and help myself to the food. I piled up my plate.

“I met Tessa and Shane on Saturday,” Gala said cheerfully. “They’re both amazing. You’re lucky to have such a nice family.”

I froze in the middle of scooping eggs onto my plate. My face flushed hot then cold. A chill ran down my spine. “W-what?”

“Gala was gone all day. She seemed to really enjoy it too,” Mam nodded happily.

Gala gave me a funny look. “Yeah. Tessa called two days ago and said they needed help with bridesmaid dresses for your brother’s wedding. She said you told her I was good at that sort of thing. So I spent the day over there.”

I glanced at Dell. He just looked confused.

Holy shit. Gala had gone over to the compound. Had she said anything? What had she told them? I’d been hoping my family would just forget I’d mentioned Gala. In fact, the whole thing had slipped my mind.

“How did they… how did Tessa get your number?” I tried to sound casual.

Gala took a sip of juice. “I think your father got Dell’s home number from Cal Fire or something.” She shrugged and looked at Dell, her eyes sparkling with animation. “Dell, it’s so cool. They had this pattern that Anita had picked out—she’s the bride. And it was okay but a bit stodgy, you know? So I suggested changing the neck and hemline and adding a cute little bustle on back, because Anita’s dress is slightly Victorian. Tessa loved that. And Shane got the most gorgeous fabric. He’s hilarious, by the way—” She grinned at me. “But we didn’t want to waste the real fabric, ’cause it’s expensive, so I quickly did a trial version with this gray cotton Tessa had. And it was so chic, Tessa wants to finish it and wear it for real! Like, just the mock-up. And Anita—”

Gala went on about the dresses, clearly in her element. The words rushed in my ears like the ocean. I sat there choking down eggs, which had turned to rubber.

Had Gala said anything about me and Dell?

Right now, at this moment, did my family know? Were they sitting
