“Someone approached you about an arson job. Who was it?” I demanded.

We’d lost no time bringing Jordy in for an interview at the police station. I dropped the polite demeanor I’d used during the first round of interviews. Now I wanted some goddamn answers. But Jordy seemed more defiant and pissed off than afraid.

He scowled. “Is that a trick question? Nobody.”

I stared at him. Beside me, John was silent, his eyes hard.

“No one’s ever approached me about arson!” Jordy insisted. “Jesus.”

“We know someone at the station was doing arson jobs on the side. If not you, who was it?”

“Shit, man. I don’t know. Nobody.” Jordy sounded offended, but there was something slightly off about it. I wasn’t buying it. John leaned toward me ever so slightly, and I knew he didn’t buy it either.

“You know we can subpoena your bank records, so you might as well tell us now. And we’re searching your apartment as we speak.”

We’d gotten the warrant based on the Life Hammer evidence. But Jordy didn’t seem too worried about it.

He sat back in his chair, his big muscled frame on display. He’d been off duty when we picked him up at his apartment, and he wore old slouchy jeans and a tight white T-shirt.

“Search all you want. I’ve got nothing to hide. Is that all you wanted to ask me about?” Jordy eyed the door.

“There is one other thing.” I took a photograph of the Life Hammer under the luminol test out of a folder and slid it across the desk.

Jordy glanced at it. He licked his lips nervously. “What’s that?”

“Do you recognize this tool?”

“Yeah. It’s for getting people out of cars. Or just breaking glass.”

I tapped the photo. “See all the green glow on this one? That’s called a luminol test, and that green you see is blood residue. This Life Hammer was covered with blood.”

Jordy went a little pale, and he shifted in his chair. “So?”

“So. This was taken from your locker.” I struck the table with my palm, causing him to jump. “Why was your Life Hammer covered in blood, Jordan?”

Jordy’s mouth dropped open. “Mine? That’s… that’s not mine! It can’t be.”

“Then why was it in your locker?”

Jordy blinked rapidly as if confused. He started to speak, closed his mouth, and thought about it. He looked between me and John. “You think that—” He waved at the photo. ”—had something to do with Liam’s death. Well, I didn’t do anything to Liam. I wouldn’t do that! And that’s not mine. I never got blood on my Life Hammer like that. I’ve hardly ever used it. And the few times I did, it was on glass. No way that’s mine.”

I stared at him coolly, waiting. I could feel the anticipation rolling off John, but he didn’t speak, just sat there, arms folded over his chest.

“Your guys must have messed up when they collected our tools. Or someone put it in there,” Jordy finally said, swallowing hard. “Hell, maybe you’re trying to frame me.”

“Why would we do that?”

Jordy looked between me and John.
