CHAPTER 6

Ted said he wanted a few minutes to look over the paperwork, so I caught up with Connie and we wandered through the main floor of the restaurant, pretending we knew what we were doing. We hoped to find some clues as to what actually happened here that night and maybe find out how the restaurant was connected to Sherri.

Turns out Connie also had a pressing personal issue that needed to be taken care of quickly before an accident occurred.

“Two children over twenty years ago and my bladder still hasn’t recovered,” she deadpanned.

I glanced back to the table where Ted was still thinking, his head bent over the paperwork. Sherri was twirling her hair, looking appropriately bored for her age. And the drinks still hadn’t arrived.

“Let’s head to the kitchen and maybe there’ll be a bathroom on the way,” she suggested.

“And if we find Tyler, we can try to talk to him.”

As luck would have it, we found two doors, each marked with a sign that showed a man, a woman, and an alien. Connie chuckled quietly to herself and pushed the door open.

Suddenly, she was backing out and seemed very flustered.

“Oh! Excuse me!” She said.

I looked behind her but saw nothing. Connie said a man was sitting in the window seat of the enormous bathroom, staring through the window. He barely moved when she came in, as though he didn’t know she was there.

“He said to come back,” she whispered.

She opened the door again and carefully looked inside. I stood behind her.

“Hello?” She said. “Hi, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize anyone was in here.”

Her long silence told me everything I needed to know. She was talking to a ghost.

Eventually, she said, “Yes, I can. It’s a gift I have.” Then she asked, “Are you Franklin? Franklin Docker?”

Oh, my gosh! She was talking to the ghost of the man Ted Canter was accused of murdering.

Connie turned to me. “It is him! He’s asking me if he’s famous now.”

She turned back and spoke into what still appeared to me to be an empty room.

“Well, in a way, I guess. Do you know…what… uh, happened here?”

I knew this was the tricky part. Not all ghosts knew that’s what they were right away. Sherri was a major exception, but then again, she’d had a long time to figure it out. Based on the news reports, Franklin Docker was killed roughly five months ago.

Connie said he nodded. “He knows he was shot and wants to know if that’s why he’s still here.”

Feeling brave, I projected my voice in the general area Connie was facing. “We don’t know, Franklin. They think it was Ted, though. Do you remember anything?”

She listened intently for several seconds, and then a look of relief washed over her face.

“He says it wasn’t Ted! He said Ted is just as much a victim as he is and that after he was shot, he actually watched the killer knock Ted out and lay him down beside Franklin.”

We were both pleased to have resolved the first part of the mystery and confirm that Ted Canter was indeed innocent.
