CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Barrick

The storm had lasted into the new day and now night. The clouds were heavy, entrenching the world in darkness. Laila and I were now soaked to our bones, along with any others stored in the other caravans. But once you were wet, none of it mattered.

Laila shockingly appeared unfazed. She sat in the corner as the water swept over us, beating down in waves, the air thick with humidity. Cedric had ordered his tent to be moved under a rocky cliffside not far off the road. I looked toward the sky. Lightning flashed, and thunder boomed in all directions. I was growing a little concerned; Laila was still out here with me, and we were surrounded by metal bars. This cage was a lightning rod waiting to blast us into oblivion. I would most likely survive, but Laila, she was just human.

My sopping wet clothes clung tightly to my body. I tried fruitlessly to wipe the water from my face. Laila barely moved a muscle. She just sat there with her elbows on her knees like nothing was happening. Perhaps a spell had been cast on her now.

“Hey, are you alright?”

Nothing, she still hadn’t moved. Her eyes remained glued to Cedric’s tent.

“Laila, are you okay?” I had to yell; the storm was almost deafening.

I reached out to touch her arm, worried that something had happened. A bolt of lightning crashed down not ten yards from our prison. The thunder immediately following it drew my attention away from her.

Suddenly, she lunged. Her hands shoved hard into my chest, knocking me back with a thud. What the hell was going on? Was she scared for me? She was on me. Damn, she was fast. Her hand removed the blade tucked to her thigh. She brandished it quickly. The white lightning reflected in the shining metal.

She was aiming straight for my heart. There was only a breath of time, but I shifted my position as the blade sliced into the meat of my shoulder. I hissed in pain.

“What the hell are you doing?” Perhaps this was Cedric’s way of getting me to feed more, to encourage my bloodlust. She had to be under some sort of spell.

She said nothing as her brow set, and she ripped the knife from me, driving it down again. I still wasn’t at full strength, and the damn magic collar around my neck was restricting me further. This was going to be tough. I didn’t want to hurt her.

She was straddling my chest in the small cell. I didn’t have much room to work.

“Don’t do this,” I said in a sharp voice. She swung again.

This time, I caught her wrist with the knife and managed to get one of my knees between us, giving me some space from that damn knife. I heaved, slamming her into the bars above. She let out a cry and came down next to me with a hard thud. I’d forgotten my strength. Even in this state, mortals paled in comparison.

Before she had time to recover, I was on her.
