Ian dropped spaghetti into a pot of water he’d brought to a boil, aware of Tris’s eyes on him through the tablet’s screen. Tris was at a bar in D.C., waiting for people he worked with, and this was the third time that week their plans to hang out had been squashed.

“So, what are you doing tonight instead of hanging with me?” Ian was trying hard not to be grouchy. Tris couldn’t help having to work when there was so much going on with the exo-suit project, and he looked pouty enough for them both.

“Working dinner with some subcontractors,” Tris said. “Who are clearly running late.” He made a show of checking his watch. “Which just makes me even more pissed that I didn’t catch you last night because you never came online. What did you do instead of hanging out with me?”

“Shitty movie night at Mark’s with his family and some of the guys.” Ian grinned at the way Tris’s eyebrows went up. “They do a big dinner and screen a terrible film once a month and it’s actually fun if you embrace the idea you’re going to watch something so bad it’s good.”

“I am in love with this idea.”

“I knew you would be. Gary and Haru say hi, by the way.”

“Because of course they were there.” Tris scrunched his nose. “Did they decide on a new place? Last time I talked to Gary, he said they were down to two apartments, one in Chinatown and another in Bay Village.”

“They’re going with Bay Village, and they’ll be two blocks from Jae and Emmett.” Ian stirred the spaghetti. “Someone put my name on a list to help paint, which I don’t appreciate at all.”

Tris smiled. “They’ll make it fun. Stuff you full of pizza as a thank you and probably turn it into a game night. I’m almost sorry I’ll miss it.” The little crease appeared between his eyebrows again, nagging at Ian.

It had to be strange for Tris, knowing the place he’d expected to return to was about to disappear whether he liked it or not. Ian had been in a similar place after Gus, thrown completely off kilter when he’d moved out of the apartment they’d shared. His circumstances at the time couldn’t have been more different from Tris’s now, but Ian remembered well how much that sense of uncertainty—the feeling that he had no control, even over the place that he’d live—had bothered him.

“Do you want me to get your stuff from the Weymouth house?” he asked. “Zac and Aiden offered me a corner of the storage locker they rent out in the Seaport and I’m happy to share it with you.”

The unease in Tris’s face vanished under a flash of genuine surprise. “Um. That’d be awesome. What made you think of it?”

“Nothing specific,” Ian fibbed. “I just didn’t want you to have to worry about it while you were out of town. I’ll make Gary and Haru help me to get back at them for signing me up to paint, too.
